From the Mecca to the biggest stages in sports journalism.

Howard University alumni Gus Johnson (B.A. ’90) and Jim Trotter (B.A. ’86) are taking center stage at the 2026 National Association of Black Journalists Convention and Career Fair in Atlanta for “Beyond 55: Where Legacy Meets the Next Play.”
Hosted by Kimberly R. Moffitt, Ph.D. ’00, dean of Howard’s Cathy Hughes School of Communications, the conversation will explore the evolving role of sports journalism in shaping culture, influencing public discourse and telling the stories that extend far beyond the playing field.

As the Cathy Hughes School of Communications celebrates more than 55 years of developing influential communicators, Johnson and Trotter represent a powerful continuation of that legacy: Bison voices informing the culture, challenging institutions and helping define what comes next.

5+5 Alumni Tour Stop #2 | Atlanta, GA: Join the Cathy Hughes School of Communications (CHSOC) at the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) Convention & Career Fair, August 12–15, as we reconnect with alumni, celebrate our legacy, and look ahead to the future of CHSOC.

On Friday, August 14, Dean Kimberly R. Moffitt will host our "Beyond 55: Where Legacy Meets the Next Play" luncheon, featuring two distinguished Howard alumni and award-winning sports journalists:

🎙️ Gus Johnson with Fox Sports, is one of the nation’s most recognizable sports broadcasters, known for his signature play-by-play calls across college football, college basketball, and the NFL.

🎙️ Jim Trotter is an award-winning journalist, bestselling author, and one of the nation’s most respected NFL reporters. Through the Jim Trotter Fellowship in CHSOC, he continues to invest in the next generation of sports journalists, with applications currently open.

Rooted in CHSOC’s commitment to "Telling the Story. Shaping the Culture.", this conversation will explore how sports journalists influence public discourse, elevate diverse perspectives, and shape the conversations that extend far beyond the game, while highlighting the impact Howard alumni continue to have on the profession.

Please note: You must be a registered NABJ participant to attend. This is a first-come, first serve event. Seats will not be saved, as we anticipate a full house. Arrive early!

We especially look forward to welcoming our CHSOC alumni back together as part of the Beyond 55 celebration.

Get ready, Bison! We are hitting the road. As part of our "Beyond 55" anniversary celebration, the Cathy Hughes School of Communications is launching the 5+5 Alumni Tour—a multi-city alumni engagement initiative representing the top 10 cities where our School of C alumni live/work/play. Introducing Beyond 55.

Fifty-five years ago, the Howard University School of Communications was founded under the leadership of our first dean, the late Tony Brown. Today, as the Cathy Hughes School of Communications, we proudly celebrate that legacy while looking toward what's next.

Throughout this milestone year, we'll commemorate our 55th anniversary with a series of events on and off campus, reconnect with and celebrate our distinguished alumni, and honor the impact of our community as we continue to shape the future.

This is more than an anniversary. It's Beyond 55.

Stay tuned—we can't wait to celebrate with our CHSOC Bison family.
