In February 2026, RAD-AID Breast Imaging Program Manager Matt Burger and Volunteers Samantha Jayasinghe and Ashish Patel traveled to Mulago National Referral Hospital and the Uganda Cancer Institute in Kampala, Uganda for educational collaboration and clinical capacity building.

The multidisciplinary team consisted of radiologists and radiology fellows subspecialized in emergency, neuroradiology, and breast imaging, along with an OB-GYN resident and an anesthesiologist, predominantly from Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

From Matt Burger, MD:

“During the visit, we delivered a series of academic sessions and hands-on training focused on breast imaging and cancer diagnosis. I delivered a Grand Rounds lecture on Breast MRI BI-RADS updates, reviewing current standards in MRI interpretation and reporting. I also piloted a dedicated breast ultrasound teaching curriculum I helped spearhead in collaboration with RAD-AID, providing structured education for radiology residents and radiography students/technicians on breast ultrasound fundamentals, lesion characterization, and practical scanning techniques.

This collaboration focused on strengthening imaging education, optimizing imaging protocols, and evaluating innovative technologies that could expand access to imaging technology in resource-limited settings.”

Thanks to support from the Philips Foundation, RAD-AID Volunteers Alexandra Koulouris and Joshni Vitale traveled alongside RAD-AID Ultrasound Director Stacey May and RAD-AID Grenada Director Petal Lemessy to provide midwifery ultrasound support to several partner hospital sites.

“I was part of a team of three, providing expert training on POCUS to 11 midwives starting with a two-day workshop using Philips Lumify and phantoms. Focus was primarily on probe orientation, fetal presentation, fetal heart rate, placental location and amniotic fluid assessment. I visited 8 hospital sites whilst in Grenada and worked with 10 midwives in the community.

Teaching them to competently check fetal presentation and placental location (both vital for a low-risk delivery) has felt extremely fulfilling, the impact of this health system strengthening project is empowering communities and elevating antenatal care, which will no doubt improve maternal and newborn health outcomes.”

In February 2026, RAD-AID Nepal Program Director and Chapter Chief for the University of Colorado RAD-AID Chapter, Dr. Eduardo Bent Robinson visited RAD-AID partner hospitals Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH) and Hospital & Rehabilitation Center for Disabled Children (HRDC).

Dr. Bent Robinson observed ~20 interventional radiology procedures, including a mix of vascular and non-vascular interventions. Other milestones of the trip included AI and PACS discussions, and ongoing sonographer support to increase familiarity with ultrasound equipment.
