Let us say No TO Reckless Driving and Driving under the influence 🛑
In December of 2012, my family travelled to attend the graduation of my cousin. I stayed behind to look after my cousin’s small business.
I was in high school, and it was the last day of the term before Christmas break. My mom bid farewell and traveled along. 2 am on a Sunday morning, I got a call from my cousin requesting me to not open for the day.
I was already up preparing for Sunday sales - as passionate as I’ve always been with business. Then I started asking myself why my cousin, who left me his shop to sell and keep profits during that period, made such requests. I went to sleep.
Breaking morning, I heard cries approaching the room we were renting, a few meters from our family compound. Then I heard the voice of my younger sister screaming, “Mommy, why?”
They rushed to my room door, banging it, making sure I didn’t do anything stupid. Luckily, I was with my cousin, Mike, in the room.
My mom had passed away that night in a car accident, which claimed the lives of about 4 others due to reckless driving.
It dawned on me when I stepped out of the room, walked to our compound, down the sloping entrance, as people had gathered. That was the longest walk I ever took.
No family should ever go through such pain caused by recklessness.
She passed away with my uncle, who left behind 3 young boys.
May their souls rest in peace.
Sir GW
