FPI Director Carla P. Ankara NATO Summit: FPI Senior Fellow Edward P. Joseph led SAIS students Nina Shelanski (FPI Research Assistant), Aurora Cumani, and Nathalia Chiesa and their Western Balkans counterparts in direct discussion with senior NATO officials and distinguished figures at this highest-level Alliance gathering.

Deputy Secretary-General Radmila Shekerinska, who has engaged with the 'Seeing is Believing' project since its inception, again met these sophisticated, emerging experts.

Thanks to the Munich Security Conference, Director of Policy & Research, Dr. Tobias Bunde joined former National Security Adviser and NATO SACEUR, General James Jones, and current NATO Assistant Secretary General Kevin Hamilton as project participants shared their 2026 Recommendations Report to NATO (launched by FPI in May.)

FPI is pleased to welcome two new Senior Fellows, Mvemba Phezo Dizolele and Cengiz Günay!

Mvemba Phezo Dizolele is a Lecturer in African Studies at the Johns Hopkins SAIS, where his work focuses on governance, security, and regional power competition in Africa. He is also the Founder and Managing Director of Dizolele Advisory LLC, a Washington, DC–based research and analysis firm that advises governments, multilateral organizations, and Fortune 500 companies on conflict, political risk, and regional stability across Africa.

Dr. Cengiz Günay is Director of the Austrian Institute for International Affairs (oiip) and a lecturer at the University of Vienna. His research focuses on autocratization, populism, neoliberal interventions and their effects on the state and statehood, the EU, European Neighbourhood Policy, and transatlantic relations, with a regional focus on Turkey and the MENA region.

Drawing on his decades of research and experience as a foreign correspondent, academic, and author, French will discuss insights from his latest book, The Second Emancipation, focusing on the extraordinary leadership of Kwame Nkrumah, the enduring role of Pan-Africanism, and the emerging challenges faced by African countries as they strive to play a greater role in world politics amidst intensifying Great Power competition.

Upcoming event! Tuesday, Feb 3: FPI welcomes Ivan Vuković, MP in Montenegro and Chair of the European Integration Committee, for a conversation with Siniša Vuković and Daniel Serwer.

Montenegro, a small multi-ethnic Balkan state, is a frontrunner in the EU accession process. After joining NATO in 2017, the country has an ambition to become the 28th EU member-state by 2028. Yet, certain domestic political actors, supported by Serbia's increasingly autocratic regime and in line with Russian strategic interests in the region, seek to prevent the country's European integration. This makes Montenegro an important piece of a wider geopolitical puzzle and, from a theoretical point of view, a very interesting case study.
