The NEA Family has lost a great leader. Our hearts are heavy today.

It is with great sadness that we share former IEA President Reginald “Reg” Weaver, trailblazer for collective bargaining rights in Illinois, passed away on Tuesday at 86.

Reg was an absolute legend. He had a gift at bringing people together and helped transform our union into the powerful force it is today. Reg was the first Black president of the IEA, serving from 1981 to 1987. He later went on to serve as president of the National Education Association, from 2002 to 2008.

Josh and Josh are hard at work lobbying while the rest of us are traveling to DC! Thanks to both of you for working your training schedules so you could make the Ernst Constituent Coffee.

Iowa NEA Director Joshua Baxter and I had the opportunity to join Senator Ernst and other constituents for her weekly coffee. We discussed the importance of funding and programs first our most vulnerable students and the need to have safe and healthy learning and working environments in our school. Official group photo will be shared when it arrives.
