Bringing together DC's 6th-12th graders attending public, charter, and private schools through the power of poetry.

The Parkmont Poetry Festival was founded in 1982 to recognize the literary gifts of young poets from the diverse schools and neighborhoods of Washington DC, and to celebrate their common interest in poetry. This year we are celebrating 39 years of spotlighting and sharing their talents and their unique perspective of their worlds.

Congratulations to the 40 winning poets of the 2025 Parkmont Poetry Festival! The 43rd annual Festival culminated in a reading and joyous celebration this weekend where young poets from across Washington, D.C., read their work and roused our spirits. Kim Schraf, our indomitable Festival leader, introduced the readers and shared what she loved about each of their poems. Our finalist judge, poet Michael Gushue, reminded all of us that "poetry is light."
