🎨✨ Celebrating Black History Month with a burst of creativity across our school network! πŸšͺ🌟

Our students embraced the national theme 'African-Americans and the Arts' by decking their doors in honor of 50 years of hip-hop. 🎀🎢

Each door reflects the vibrant impact of African-American contributions in the artistic realms, from graffiti to fashion, dance, music, and theater. πŸ–ŒοΈπŸ‘—

πŸŽπŸ‘ We are so excited for our families to see them in person this week during our celebrations of learning!

Our students from Young ES have been so excited to learn about and celebrate the rich culture of Hip Hop for Black History Month.

This week, students in Ms.Sherrie's class learned about Zyah Brown, aka Fly Zyah, a 12-year-old groundbreaking hip-hop artist from DC and a former TR student.

When Zyah found out that students had been celebrating Hip Hop, she was thrilled to visit our classrooms to talk to the students about her journey to becoming an artist at the age of 6.

Zyah has performed and been honored at the Kennedy Center and has even shared the stage with her favorite Hip Hop artist, Rapsody.

Part of her very first music video was filmed right here in our school!

Check out her videos:

Kicking off Black History Month with a heartfelt journey down memory lane, we're featuring Ms. Cynthia Carter, a Charles Young alum! We wanted to highlight to our students the importance of knowing about the living history of the people and institutions that preceded us.

Before joining the federal government, Ms.Carter grew up at Langston Terrace and attended Young, Browne, and Spingarn. She fondly remembers strong, caring Black educators at our Charles Young campus who shaped her path.

A huge shoutout to our Young Elementary and Middle School ambassadors, who hosted Ms. Carter on a special tour of our buildings and learned so much about her experience while she attended, diving deep into her school days and celebrating her moments.

Exciting day at Young ES and 4th St! 🌟 Special guest, Author Xstal Yumi, a licensed cosmetologist and creator of the beloved Cosmo Miko series, shared valuable lessons on proper hair care with our 2G and 3G scholars. Learning and fun combined!

Today, during professional development, our dedicated staff across campuses took a deep dive, reviewing the components and purpose of defining high-quality work for our students.

Our educators joined in lively discussions to identify patterns as we shape a shared vision of high-quality workβ€”focusing on complexity, craftsmanship, and authenticity.

Together, we set goals and planned action steps based on standard criteria to fuel growth for our learners across all grade levels. πŸ“šπŸš€
