Boren Spotlight!
Ebba Turi wais a 2023 Boren Scholar from Texas A&M University who participated in Boren’s African Flagship Language Initiative. Through the AFLI program, Ebba studied Swahili first at the University of Florida during the summer and then in the Republic of Tanzania during the fall.
“I had the privilege of engaging with diverse communities across Africa and the Middle East while exploring the continent through travel. Moreover, my linguistic abilities extend beyond Swahili, as I’m also proficient in Oromo, my native language.
What I loved most during my time in Tanzania was the sense of community I felt there. The friendly and welcoming nature of the people in Tanzania – led by my host family in Arusha and later my landlord in Zanzibar Island – who took me in and made me feel at home throughout my Boren experience. Most importantly, Tanzania’s passive, tolerant, and loving community taught me how to live patiently and easily.
I’m also grateful for a community of incredibly talented and curious cohorts that he met through Boren. I am preparing to embark on graduate studies at the Bush School of Government and Public Service this fall where I hope to delve into National Security and Diplomacy. To me, being a Boren Scholar means being inspired and inspiring others to connect with people across language and cultures in order to make a positive impact in this dynamic world that we live in today.”
