Get Ready for Halloween: Don't be a fright to your neighbors!
Here are five tips for being a good neighbor this Halloween:
1.) If you are walking through the neighborhood in a group, keep your conversation noise level down, especially after 10 p.m. Do not block sidewalks or walk in the streets.
2.) If you host a gathering at your home or apartment, you are responsible for your guests' behavior. If someone is acting irresponsibly, ask the person to leave or call DC Police at 911.
3.) Keep your front and back yard, as well as the area surrounding your property, clean and tidy. Loose trash attracts rodents!
4.) You may be a night owl, but that doesn't mean that your neighbors are too. District of Columbia Quiet Hours go into effect from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. every night of the week.
Noise complaints can be reported to the Metropolitan Police Department or the university at any time of day. Reports submitted to the university will be investigated and addressed by the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities. If you choose to celebrate the holiday by hosting a party or having guests over, please remember that any individual or any residence that an MPD officer deems is making excessive noise between the hours of 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. is subject to a fine and/or jail time.
5.) If you plan on being home on Halloween evening, have a few bags of candy on hand to pass out to trick-or-treaters! Make sure to turn your front porch light on and keep your walkways clear of debris.
