Artist Biography:

Mary Palmer, a Washington, DC-based artist, is known for her landscape and cityscape works that transport the viewer from their everyday life to her romantic escapes. Working exclusively in oil paints, Palmer thoughtfully creates multiple layers of vibrant colors that focus on the concept of space. The artist, who grew-up exploring the mountains of Pennsylvania and the city of B

altimore, has always been interested in painting. She studied art at a small, liberal arts college in upstate New York before moving to Washington, DC, several years ago. Our nation's capitol is a mirror for how she approaches art; it is layers of historic and modern, tradition and new ideas, power and poverty, and the indelible and the innovative. Seeking an escape from the high pressures of District life, she finds balance through the experiences that make the city seem more approachable: a walk through Rock Creek Park, a bike ride to work, or a run around the National Mall. These everyday activities, combined with her travels across the United States and abroad, are the catalyst for her creative process. Focusing on layers and space, Palmer concentrates on each level of a work before moving to the next phase. She begins with a created, imperfect surface: a canvas or piece of wood to which she applies texture, including areas coated in gesso or decoupaged newspapers, map pages, or journal entries. After a light layer of paint is added, the surface takes on a life of its own. Next, Palmer adds thicker, bolder paint using either brushes or palette knives. With each stroke, she explores the relationships between light, color, and space that unfold as she works. The artist allows her process to dictate what is revealed on the canvas. In her landscape works, she finds that imagery of mountains, trees, or waterways appear as she focuses on ways to translate the contrast of light and shadows to her surfaces. The journey to create and the artistic process behind each work is what is most important to Palmer. Her paintings do not replicate a particular scene from her past experiences but rather use the canvas as a vehicle to explore and interpret how she arrived at that location. Her works take viewers across the world on a natural exploration, but ground them in a spatial reality achieved through textured imagery and vivid representations. I love trying new things when I get custom requests. While working on a commissioned painting of the American Flag, I had so much fun experimenting with the concept!
