While we grieve and fight for our fathers, brothers, uncles, and sons harmed and lost due to state-sanctioned violence, we cannot continue to exclude the police violence that Black women and femmes experience from the narrative.
•
Black women and femmes are not secondary. We are not an afterthought. We are on the front lines of every movement and protest against police brutality and we deserve the same care, concern, and support that men get during these times.
•
Black women and femmes deserve our rage, mobilization, and protection, and not as a last minute rectification. See us. Say their names. Fight for their justice. Do not let anyone forget. 🌙💎

Meet Kisanet Woldeyohannes, a member of our Spring 2020 Leadership Camp cohort. Kisanet is the creator of the CAMPAIGN FOR CHARTER SCHOOL TRANSPARENCY.
•
Describing her inspiration for the project, Kisanet says "I got the idea from the book Powernomics by Claud Anderson. D.C. charter schools are not held to the same FOIA and open records laws as other public schools though they are both publically funded. My goal was to create a plan to bring awareness to this issue in order to hold charter schools accountable. Through this process, I learned a great deal about the subject and I hope my awareness campaign can come to fruition soon."

The Moonstone Education Leadership Camp experience culminates in each cohort member drafting a plan to address a social issue in their community through the lens of their personal interests, passions, and professional goals. This is just a snippet of the in-depth design thinking and innovation these ladies applied to create awareness and solutions for community concerns. Incredible work, Kisanet! 🌙💎

Meet Kiera Hammond, a member of our Spring 2020 Leadership Camp cohort. Kiera is the creator of TAMPA'S HERITAGE.
•
Describing her inspiration for the project, Kiera says "The inspiration for my project stemmed from the discovery of more than 120 coffins buried under a project housing development in Tampa, Florida. Zion Cemetery (est. 1901) was home to a group of African-Americans in the Tampa Bay community. I wanted to develop a platform that sought to address the lack of representation of African-American communities' cultural heritage, whether it is on the platform of tangible or intangible cultural heritage."

"Why another womxn's leadership program?"
"Why don't you include STEM?"
"Why is this only for people of color?"
"Why does this matter?"
These are the questions we aim to address as we begin our pilot programming this spring.
When Moonstone was imagined, we knew it couldn't be more of the same. We knew there were populations, identities, and experiences being excluded from life-changing opportunities. We knew that what was already out there was not enough.
We are striving to create the space, teach the skills, provide the opportunities, and make the connections that young people need to grow into their very best selves and achieve everything they desire and deserve.
As long as these issues persist, we exist. 🌙💎

From : Today is Black Women's Equal Pay Day, marking the day the date that Black women have to work into the new year to FINALLY catch up to what white, non-Hispanic men earned last year.
