That rich brown color comes entirely from molasses - a natural byproduct of boiling sugar juice from sugar beets and sugar cane. Molasses is spun off when extracting sugar and added back when making brown sugar.

April Fools' Day fun fact 😄 Because they look so similar, swapping sugar and salt is one of the oldest kitchen pranks around! But under a magnifying glass you can tell them apart: sugar crystals are rectangular, salt crystals are cube-shaped.
