Youth For Understanding (YFU) advances intercultural understanding, mutual respect, and social responsibility through educational exchanges for youth, families and communities. Ever since her own YFU exchange to Mexico back in 2008/09, Mirjam has been an incredible force for YFU Deutschland. Whether she’s running seminars, helping inbound students master German, or building bridges across cultures, she does it all with so much heart.

🏡 Host Family of the Month: Outi-Leena Pesonen "Iitu"

From being a YFU exchange student in the US (1991–1992) to hosting 9 exchange students and 6 au pairs in Finland, Iitu’s YFU journey spans decades and continents!

As an active volunteer, support person, and board member for YFU Finland, Iitu brings incredible passion, experience, and leadership to everything she does.

Staff members from around the globe gathered in Madrid for the YFU International Staff Workshop 2026 to connect, collaborate, and grow together.

Here’s what working in an intercultural environment has taught us:

With over 45 member organizations across 6 continents and 310,000+ alumni empowered since 1951, our strength lies in our global network.

ISW 2026 is co-funded by the European Union and brings together the people who navigate the everyday realities of intercultural exchange programs at YFU to share, learn, and grow as a unified team.

🌐 Session III: Youth Diplomacy and Strategic Vision

Our final panel of the YFU Symposium on Intercultural Exchange and Democratic Engagement brings together:

They will explore a strategic vision for the future of diplomacy through youth exchange and how to position it within broader frameworks of international cooperation.

What does the YFU "Safety Net" actually look like?

Flying across the world for an exchange program is an incredible adventure, but knowing you’re not alone makes all the difference.

Hear from Defne, a YFU Türkiye volunteer, as she breaks down how YFU’s support system works in practice, from dedicated contact people and monthly check-ins to simple WhatsApp group chats for everyday questions (like finding a local SIM card! 📲).

Whether it’s practicing a new language over coffee or meeting host families face-to-face, volunteers like Defne ensure every exchange student feels right at home. 💜
