This week for our Local Arts Hero, we are highlighting NEWorks Productions, a DC-based powerhouse that has been turning the arts into a force for social change for over two decades!

Founded in 2003 by producer and composer Nolan Williams, Jr., NEWorks is one of the nation's premier creators of impact-arts programming, producing concerts, theatrical productions, documentaries, and educational initiatives that reflect the change they seek in the world. Their work has reached millions of people across three continents, tackling everything from civic engagement and civil rights history to health, wellness, and environmental awareness.

Some of their standout works include the Emmy-recognized documentary "Becoming Douglass Commonwealth," the new musical GRACE, and the viral civic anthem "I Have A Right To Vote." This February, NEWorks launched "Just Like Selma," an award-winning gospel-rooted film and civic engagement campaign now active in over 100 cities. Drawing on the legacy of the 1965 Selma-to-Montgomery marches, the project uses music to call on communities to carry that same spirit of courage and collective action into today's fight for justice.

This week for our Local Arts Hero, we are highlighting Dementia Stories DC, an initiative that is using portraits, oral histories, and community art-making to honor the lives and stories of DC residents living with dementia and Alzheimer's!

Dementia Stories DC is an undertaking of the DC-based nonprofit, The Dap Project. Previously featured as a Local Arts Hero in July, the Dap Project preserves community narratives through storytelling, photography, and multimedia exhibits. Building on that foundation, Dementia Stories DC turns its lens toward residents navigating memory loss and the caregivers who walk alongside them. The initiative unfolds in three parts: arts-based workshops facilitated by dementia care experts from the George Washington University Institute for Brain Health & Dementia, professional portrait sessions that capture meaningful moments, and oral histories that let participants shape and share their own narratives.

This spring, the project brought its workshops to sites across several wards, including The Residences at Benning Road, Michigan Park Christian Church, and Chevy Chase Library, giving people living with memory loss and their care partners a rare chance to connect, create, and learn supportive practices together.

As we continue to introduce this year's additions to BCDC's ever-true team, meet our Board's newest Member-at-Large, Mark Koumans '86!

Marnix (“Mark”) Koumans retired from 34 years of government service in 2025 and currently is an international border security and immigration consultant. He joined the U.S. Foreign Service in 1991 and served for the State Department at posts in Asia and Europe as well as in Washington, DC. In 2008 he transferred to the Department of Homeland Security, where he served at headquarters in the international and policy offices. Later he worked at U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) in a series of executive roles as well as at U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), where he was its Deputy Director.

Mark concentrated in East Asian Studies at Brown. He and his wife Lucy have two daughters, one of whom also graduated from Brown in 2020.5! He enjoys paddling on the Potomac and biking.

The National Book Festival is this weekend, and Brown faculty and alums are among the featured speakers! If you're at the Convention Center on Saturday morning, check out Watson Instiute fellow Marc J. Dunkelman's program. Professor  Dunkelman (“Why Nothing Works”) and Annie Lowrey (“The Time Tax”) tackle the topic of how the government functions via different approaches — Dunkelman as a former federal employee, Lowrey as a reporter who has covered the federal government. Garrett M. Graff moderates this conversation about government gridlock, possible solutions and why we expect so much from it to begin with.

Pulitzer winner Andrew Sean Greer ‘92 - who previously partnered with us for an installment of the 1 Bear 1 Book series - is among the other authors taking part in the National Book Festival on Saturday afternoon. This week for our Local Arts Hero, we are highlighting the DC Youth Orchestra Program (DCYOP), the region's leading ensemble-based classical music education program empowering young people across DC, Maryland, and Virginia!

Founded in 1960, DCYOP has spent over six decades transforming lives through music, having taught more than 50,000 students of all backgrounds, abilities, and learning styles. The program was the first youth orchestra to perform at the Kennedy Center and has since toured 24 countries, performed for U.S. presidents and diplomats, and worked alongside legendary musicians including Aaron Copland, Yo-Yo Ma, Gustavo Dudamel, and Mstislav Rostropovich.

As the only preK-12 program of its kind, DCYOP meets every student where they are, offering everything from beginner group lessons for kids as young as four and a half to advanced full symphonic orchestras. Through initiatives like the Talent Development Program and the Washington Musical Pathways Initiative, DCYOP also provides extended mentorship and support for young artists of color and students needing additional resources to pursue music at the highest levels.

As we begin to introduce this year's additions to BCDC's ever-true team, meet our Board's newest Young Alumni Co-Chair, Aric Fulton AM '22!

Aric serves as the inaugural State Attendance Coordinator for the District of Columbia government, leading chronic absenteeism reduction and student engagement strategy and policy across the District’s 70+ local education agencies and 250+ schools.

At heart, Aric is a lifelong learner and educator — a thread that runs from his childhood on Chicago’s South Side through his undergraduate studies in Secondary Education at Ball State University to his MA in Urban Education Policy from Brown. He is an alumnus of the Surge Institute Fellowship, a New Sector Alliance Leadership Longevity Fellow, and an Education Leaders of Color Fellow, and currently serves on the board of the Post-Secondary National Policy Institute.

Outside of work, he enjoys live music, international travel, Black literature, and is always searching for a good coffee shop and new local experiences. He’s excited to help build community for Brown alumni across the DMV.

Meet the Brown Class of 2030's DMV continent! Yesterday evening, BCDC and the Brown Club of Baltimore hosted our region-wide send-off reception for eager incoming students and their proud families. ❤️🐻

Against the backdrop of Lake Elkhorn in Columbia, MD, the newest Brunonians got to know one another and were heartily welcomed into the broader local Brown community. Our amazing volunteer team--ably led by Baltimore's Meenu Joshi '02 and BCDC's Emily Stovall '06 and Sean Siperstein '05--arranged for pizza and snacks, a celebratory Brown Class of 2030 cake, raffle baskets filled with Brown and Rhode Island themed goodies, Bruonian decor and swag, and an interactive postering activity. Unsurprisingly, folks lingered in conversation for nearly an hour after our official 7 PM end time. 🙂

This week for our Local Arts Hero, we are highlighting Silver Spring Stage, the beloved community theater that has been bringing live drama, comedy, and classics to the DMV for nearly six decades!

Silver Spring Stage is an all-volunteer, nonprofit community theater that has produced a full season of plays each year since the 1960s, from Shakespearean tragedy to contemporary drama to holiday classics. Beyond the productions themselves, Silver Spring Stage serves as a launchpad for local playwrights and artists. Its annual One-Act Festival showcases original short works by writers from across the DMV, giving emerging voices a real stage and a real audience. The theater also relies on and nurtures a deep bench of community volunteers, from set builders to box office staff, making every show a true community effort from start to finish.

The 2026-27 season is kicking off this month with the 2026 One-Act Festival, featuring original short plays from local writers, running two weekends from August 14-23. To learn more about Silver Spring Stage, grab tickets, or get involved, visit ssstage.org!

It's last call to greet new Brunonians before they head off to College Hill! Please join BCDC and the Brown Club of Baltimore this Saturday (August 8 @ 5 PM) for Brown’s Summer Send-Off at Lake Elkhorn Park in Columbia, MD, where incoming students, families, and alumni will gather to celebrate the start of the class of 2030's Brown journey!

Enjoy snacks, drinks, and a beautiful view as incoming students meet classmates, connect with the Brown community, and share the excitement of what’s ahead. We can’t wait to welcome the class of 2030 to Brown! (Just take a look at the beaming faces of their Class of 2029 predecessors at last year's send off. ❤️🐻.)
