Daniel Umemezie, an 18-year-old Nigerian-American poet, has been named the 2026–27 U.S. National Youth Poet Laureate, becoming the 10th young poet to receive the national honor. Daniel grew up in Nigeria before moving to the United States at 13, and had previously served as the Cedar Valley Youth Poet Laureate and Iowa Student Poet Ambassador. His poetry draws inspiration from his Nigerian heritage while exploring themes of identity, family, politics, and place. During his tenure, Daniel will travel across the United States for poetry readings and workshops. Takeaway: the experience of moving between two countries and cultures can become the very source of a young person's voice, and Daniel is proof that identity, fully embraced, can turn into something the whole country wants to hear.
