Google is laying off hundreds in its recruitment division !

Google confirmed it will lay off hundreds of staff members who helped recruit and hire employees, as Silicon Valley continues its cost-cutting efforts.

The latest cuts come after Google parent Alphabet in January eliminated 12,000 jobs, or about 6% of its workforce, across the company as it grappled with economic uncertainty that hit the company’s bottom line last year, especially its core advertising business.

During Google’s July earnings call, CEO Sundar Pichai said the company was continuing to slow its “expense growth and pace of hiring.”

“We continue to invest in top engineering and technical talent while also meaningfully slowing the pace of our overall hiring,” Google spokesperson Courtenay Mencini said in a statement Wednesday, adding that the workload for recruiters has declined as hiring slows. “To ensure we operate efficiently, we’ve made the hard decision to reduce the size of our recruiting team.”

Data protection Bill likely to come up before Cabinet today

The draft data protection Bill is expected to come up before the Union Cabinet today (Wednesday), with the legislation expected to be tabled in the Monsoon session of Parliament after Cabinet approval.

A draft of the Bill was first floated last November, following which it underwent a few rounds of public consultation. Based on the inputs received during the consultations, a second draft was readied which then underwent some rounds of inter-ministerial discussions.

“The Cabinet is expected to take up the Digital Personal Data Protection Bill, 2022 on Wednesday and once it gets the approval, the Bill will be tabled in the upcoming Parliament session,” a senior government official said, requesting anonymity.

Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg delivered a blow to Elon Musk on Wednesday night, as the tech billionaires’ rivalry went live with the launch of Instagram’s much-anticipated Threads platform, a clone of Twitter.

“Let’s do this. Welcome to Threads,” Zuckerberg posted on the app, along with a fire emoji.

Analysts said investors were salivating over the possibility that Threads’ ties to Instagram might give it a built-in user base and advertising apparatus. That could siphon ad dollars from Twitter, whose new CEO is trying to revive the microblogging company’s struggling business.

While Threads launched as a standalone app, users could log in using their Instagram credentials and follow the same accounts, potentially making it an easy addition to existing habits for Instagram’s more than 2 billion monthly active users. “Investors can’t help but be a little excited about the prospect that Meta really has a ‘Twitter-Killer’,” said Danni Hewson, head of financial analysis at investment platform firm AJ Bell.

Meta stock closed up 3% on Wednesday ahead of the launch, outpacing gains by competitor tech companies as the broader market edged down.
