What a wonderful evening! š
I had the opportunity to attend Andrea Malkin Brennerās book talk for How to College: What to Know Before You Go (And When Youāre There) and finally got my 2019 copy signed! (The newest edition includes post-pandemic updates.)
One of my favorite takeaways was Andreaās reminder that, as parents, itās often better to resist the urge to immediately solve our childrenās problems. Instead, we can ask questions, help them think through challenges, and encourage them to come up with their own solutions. Thatās how they build the confidence and executive function skills theyāll need in college and throughout life.
As someone who works with students every day, I couldnāt agree more. Skills like time management, organization, self-advocacy, problem-solving, budgeting, and even doing laundry arenāt just ācollege skillsā, theyāre life skills. And the earlier we start helping our kids develop them, the smoother the transition to college can be.
For those of you who have kids in high school or college, what non-academic skill do you think has been (or will be) the most important for their success? š
