Today marks the third International Day of People of African Descent! In 2021, the UN began observing this day to recognize and celebrate the unique contributions of the African Diaspora in our everyday life. At our university, we are surrounded by men and women of the African Diaspora who are intellectual leaders and innovators, and we intend to continue to promote your voices at the Center!

Join us next Thursday for our annual Townhall where we’re discussing gender equality at the Mecca. This event is an open and safe space for HU students to discuss a wide range of issues related to gender on campus and beyond.

St. Clair Detrick Jules and Dr. Nicole Jenkins will discuss Black hair and the importance of storytelling through art, activism and research. Join a discussion on Black hair joy and experiences of discrimination, the importance of the CROWN Act, and opportunities to participate in research. St. Clair will discuss her debut book, My Beautiful Black Hair: 101 Natural Hair Stories from the Sisterhood (Chronicle Books, September 2021), showcases the photographs and stories of Black women embracing their crowns. Dr. Jenkins will share details about her current research Global Crowns: Emotions Surrounding Natural Hair of Black Women around the Globe.

The Women’s Center, in collaboration with D.C Small Business Development Center, invites you to join us in the Women’s Leadership Forum for discussions to educate, inspire, and bring awareness to women entrepreneurs, existing and aspiring.

This year’s theme is Personal Branding: Increasing Product Visibility & Strengthening Brand Identity for Your Small Business. The goal of this forum is to empower women entrepreneurs and leaders with actionable agendas. This unique forum will bring locally and nationally respected leaders together to discuss the significance of personal branding for small businesses, while also providing a platform for attendees to discover new ways in which to expand and contribute to their communities by turning existing supporters into dedicated clients.

This year's International Women's Day event will focus on the diverse roles, contributions, and challenges of Black women in the tech sector, featuring panelists Chanelle Hardy, Head of Civil Rights and Strategic Outreach for Google, Erica Terry Derryck, VP of Communications at Intuit Small Business and Self-Employed Group, and Denasia Pinkard Content Design Manager and Equity Lead at Meta.

On Friday, January 27th, in partnership with the Center for HBCU Research, Leadership and Policy (HBCU Center), we hosted a roundtable discussion on Black Women Leaders at Howard, moderated by Associate Provost Dr. Melanie Carter and featured Dr. Tashni-Ann Dubroy, Dr. Sandra Crewe, and Dr. Oluwaranti Akiyode.

The panelists engaged in a fascinating conversation about women's leadership at Howard, considering the historic dean appointments made over the recent years.
