Dave Ramsey wants you poor.

Here's why I think so...
Yesterday, a Yahoo Finance article quoted Dave Ramsey's advice to stop contributing to your 401K for up to 18 months - or more - to pay off your debt.
THAT'S STUPID!
Here's why:
1. Lost time.
By waiting to contribute, you're losing out on compound interest, actually triple compounding! It will take more money (which you probably won't have) to reach your retirement goals. You'll be scrambling, not to mention struggling, to catch-up. And retirement will arrive faster than you think.
2. You'll always have debt.
Be it a mortgage, car payment, student loans, credit cards, etc. Emergencies happen, debt follows.
Here's how you balance:
1. DO NOT STOP your 401K contributions. At least contribute to get the employment match.
2. Pay your debt. Pay off the highest interest rate debt first. This will lower your total interest payments.
3. Only consolidate IF you can get lower interest rates. If you get a 0% credit card consolidation, be sure to pay off the balance BEFORE the introductory rate ends
Finally, DO THE MATH! Sometimes your investments are earning 3x that of the debt Interest rate. Which means investing more will grow your nest egg faster, outpacing the debt interest accumulating.
For example, my brokerage account typically earns 18% annually (average over 10 years). My second mortgage is 5.5%. Rather than paying off the loan early, I invested.
Results: I retired 10 years early!
