• As some of you have been following, we have been painting with our SONflower since he was able to do tummy time! A lot of people usually believe that could be too early considering well children will literally put everything in their mouths!

As “free spirited” parents that we are, we simply did not put our 3 month old infant at risk of toxic chemicals or lead! We carefully put thick construction paper and non toxic paint in a ziploc bag and voila! Mess free painting!

However, our baby boy has grown from an infant to a very adventurous toddler! We absolutely adore this stage and cringe at the same time because he gets into everything his little hands can reach!

He gradually went from mess free painting to finger painting to using technology such as art instruments: sponges, stamps, and the famous paintbrushes! Yes! 15 month old toddlers can use paintbrushes with their increased hand eye coordination that will help them later on when they are around 18 months and re ready for gluing shapes and letters on construction paper!

There’s more benefits to using art instruments with toddlers than just hand eye coordination:
• It helps build cognitive memory!
Your toddler sees these colors on their toys and clothes and when painting they actually get to use them and play with them and even make more colors that they notice! Their brains will not forget these colors and soon your little one will be able to name and recognize these colors!
•Bilateral Coordination!
Sounds fancy! As your little one discovers this paintbrush, you may see him flip the paintbrush 10,000 times! Trust me that’s a good thing! He’s learning bilateral coordination and that means figuring out how this thing function! This will also be great for he’s older and has to use those problem solving skills to get something to work!
•Sensory fun!
It also helps encourage an awesome sensory experience. Trust me, as a mama and a toddler/pre-K teacher, they will touch it, smell it, and even try to eat it!
•Creative Genius!
Art such as painting encourages creativity! It builds self esteem and independence because it something they can simply do with very little guidance! 💙
