It’s easy to get bogged down in the "big words" of algebra, but don't let the vocabulary stall the progress. It is much more important that your child understands the concept of a mystery number than it is for them to label it a "variable" on day one.

Try:

When you see something like (x + 3) (x + 5), don’t try to do it all in your head. Put it in a simple 2×2 grid:
1. Write one binomial on the side (x, 3) and the other across the top (x, 5).
2. Multiply each row/column pair to fill the boxes:
x·x = x², x·5 = 5x, 3·x = 3x, 3·5 = 15
3. Add everything and combine like terms:
x² + 5x + 3x + 15 → x² + 8x + 15
This method makes it harder to forget a term and easier to stay organized, especially when negatives show up.

Detective Work:
• If the final answer is 11...

Think of equations like a balance scale—whatever you do to one side, you MUST do to the other!
The Golden Rule: Keep it balanced! ⚖️
Why it works:
• The equals sign (=) means both sides weigh the same
• If you add weight to one side, add it to the other too
• If you remove weight from one side, remove it from the other
• The scale stays balanced, and you find x!
Example: x - 5 = 12
• Left side: x - 5 | Right side: 12
• Add 5 to BOTH sides to keep balance
• Left side: x - 5 + 5 = x | Right side: 12 + 5 = 17
• Result: x = 17 ✓
