The United States Government is moving to reclassify cannabis as a Schedule III drug in a historic shift. The latest proposal from the DEA, which still must be reviewed by the White House Office of Management and Budget, would recognize the medical uses of cannabis and acknowledge that it has less potential for abuse.
HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra said Wednesday that the agency has responded to President Joe Biden’s request “to provide a scheduling recommendation for ma*****na to the DEA.”
“We’ve worked to ensure that a scientific evaluation be completed and shared expeditiously,” he added.
According to the DEA, Schedule I drugs “have no currently accepted medical use in the United States, a lack of accepted safety for use under medical supervision, and a high potential for abuse.”
Schedule III drugs “have a potential for abuse less than substances in Schedules I or II and abuse may lead to moderate or low physical dependence or high psychological dependence.” They currently include ketamine and some anabolic steroids.
Does that mean recreational cannabis use is finally federally legal? Alas, no.
Then why are we celebrating?
While this is definitely NOT the same as legalizing it, it is still a step in the right direction. Because of its current scheduling, funding for cannabis research is limited or non-existent simply because it is listed as a Schedule I drug. In other words, scientists and researchers are barred from conducting studies to further understand the wonders of the plant.
This reclassification will not only open the doors to research, it will also open doors for small businesses (like Lucy’s!) by lifting the unfair burden of tax code 280E that is currently placed on thousands of legal cannabis businesses.
What happens next?
The proposed changes will be reviewed by the White House Office of Management and Budget before the DEA initiates a public comment period.

Welcome to the final episode of season one of Living in the Weeds This entire series has been validating in so many ways, but to hear about the pharmacology behind it all was just the perfect way to end our first season. Having the opportunity to talk about neurovirgence and cannabis with two pharmacists is a nerdy dream come true. In this episode, Jessica, Simi, Megan and I talk about:
your endocannabinoid system as a thermostat for wellness
cannabis through the lens of Ayurvedic medicine
how neurodivergence manifests outside the brain
the importance of whole plant medicine
And that’s just a tidbit from the wealth of information that’s packed into this episode.

🎉 Today would have been Lucy’s 104th Birthday! No, not me—it’s Lucy Bustamante, my maternal grandmother 💚
❤️ Lucy taught me a lot about how to love others, respect all creatures on this earth, and to listen with purpose 🧘♀️
🍬Did I mention it was her great-great-great-great Uncle Felix that handed down the 200-year old family recipe I use for my lozenges? Yea, you could say Lucy was my inspiration for starting on this path 😉
👑 Lucy lived life to the fullest and LOVED that her birthday fell on Twelfth Night—the start of the Mardi Gras Carnival Season 💜💛💚

But here we are.

In this week’s episode of Living in the Weeds, Jessica & I continue our conversation with Catieosaurus and talk about some of the limitations to using cannabis for ADHD, and the negative trends we are seeing with neurodivergent cannabis users.
Have you felt your neurodivergent symptoms worsen with certain cannabis strains? Have you ever felt yourself crashing into a stress-nap after smoking? Ever wonder if the higher THC levels in your favorite strains are making things worse?

It wouldn't be Wednesday without a new episode of Living in the Weeds!
This week Jessica Reilly-Chevalier and I interview the person that got me thinking about myself using a neurodivergent lense, Cate Osborn.
I identified with their frank conversations about living life with ADHD and depression/chronic pain and found myself making major changes based on their recommendations.
It is no exaggeration when I say they truly changed my life.
Cate Osborn (aka Catieosaurus- she/they) is a certified s*x educator with ADHD, a mental health advocate and full-time content creator. As a professional streamer and TTRPG influencer, she is passionate about opening conversations about neurodiversity and accessibility into the gaming community.
We talk about some of the challenges the neurodivergent community faces and how cannabis can help alleviate them.
Did you know up to 90% of people that identify as neurodivergent have trouble with sleep? Whether it's falling asleep, staying asleep, or just the actual quality, it is a trait that many of us share in this community. We go over some of the ways cannabis can help with sleep and why it is so important.
Oh…and we talk about S*X, too 😉
This conversation was so amazing, we had to divide it into two parts. Link in comments ⬇️

The second episode of our new series Living in the Weeds with Jessica Reilly-Chevalier is LIVE and features the incredible Miyabe Shields, PhD 🎉
Miyabe is an aboslute force, full of incredible knowledge with a talent for applying scientific language to what can feel like intangible experiences of neurodiversity.
The entire conversation with Miyabe had to be broken into 2 parts because it’s just SO rich with information, but this episode covers:
➡️ Why lived experiences have as much clinical value as scientific research
➡️how to create reproducible experiences with smoking
➡️the “designer dogs” problem created by focuses on THC potency
& so much more 😍
