We are proud to shine a light on Gina (Abruzzino) Ries ’01 for our October Alumni Spotlight! An educator for 20 years and a YSU Athletics Hall of Fame inductee, Gina has used her gifts and talents to inspire young learners. Today, she and her husband, Matthew, are continuing the Kennedy tradition by giving their children, Aria and Anthony, the same faith-filled, close-knit school experience she treasures!🦅💙

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝘂𝘀 𝗮 𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝗯𝗶𝘁 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗴𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲: I chose a career in education because both of my parents were teachers, and I always enjoyed school and being part of the school community. School was about more than academics; it was where I spent time with friends, played sports, and made lasting memories. Becoming a teacher felt like a natural path for me.

I attended YSU on a golf scholarship, where I competed on the Women’s Golf Team for four years while completing my undergraduate studies. I continued at YSU for graduate school, earning degrees in Middle Childhood Education, Educational Leadership and Principalship, Technology, Science, and Language Arts. Today, I teach Technology and STEM to students in grades 4–6 in Boardman.

I am proud to have been inducted into the YSU Athletics Hall of Fame for my collegiate golf career, an honor I will always cherish. Without a doubt, though, I am most proud of my family. My husband, Matthew, and I have been married for 15 years, and we have two children, Aria and Anthony, who both attend JFK Upper Campus.

The Class of 1966 came home last weekend to celebrate their 60th Reunion. Festivities included a gathering at Candywood Winery, a school tour, Mass celebrated by Father Chris Cicero '01, a reunion dinner at Leo's.

Had a wonderful time welcoming the Class of 1966 home today! They have a full weekend of activities and also celebrated Mass in our chapel with Father Chris Cicero '01. It was a great Kennedy day 💙🦅

We are so proud to shine a light on Michael O'Brien '04 for our July Alumni Spotlight. He has used his gifts and talents to make a significant impact on our community and is committed to giving his children the same Kennedy experience that he grew up with.

What career did you choose and tell us a little bit about how you got there. After leaving the Marine Corps, I used the GI Bill to continue my education. I earned two master's degrees, one in Social Work from Case Western Reserve University and an MBA from Youngstown State University. My undergraduate degree was in Human Ecology, and I'm fortunate that I get to use all those educational experiences in my career today.

I currently work as a Homeless Outreach Social Worker for the Department of Veterans Affairs, serving veterans throughout Trumbull, Mahoning, Columbiana, Jefferson, and Carroll counties. It's an incredibly challenging yet rewarding career because I can serve my fellow veterans every day.

I believe veterans often feel more comfortable working with other veterans because we share many similar experiences. That common bond helps build trust and rapport, making it easier to connect with those who may be going through some of the most difficult times in their lives. Being able to help veterans find housing, access resources, and improve their quality of life is one of the most meaningful parts of my job.

The Kennedy Family is pleased to announce our 2026 John D. Gillen Golden Eagle Distinguished Alumni Award recipient, The Honorable James Fredericka ’71. He will serve as the Commencement Speaker for the Class of 2026 on Saturday, May 23 at 9 a.m. at Robins Theatre.

James A. Fredericka is a lifelong resident of Trumbull County, Ohio, who has dedicated over four decades to the legal profession. A graduate of John F. Kennedy Catholic School in 1971, he continued his education at the University of Notre Dame, graduating Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics in 1975. His academic achievements include membership in the Phi Beta Kappa and Omicron Delta Epsilon honor societies. He earned his Juris Doctor from Case Western Reserve University in 1978 and was admitted to the Ohio State Bar that same year.

Throughout his career, Judge Fredericka has served the public in multiple capacities. He began as an assistant prosecuting attorney for Trumbull County from 1978 to 1984 before spending 37 years in private practice with the firms Ambrosy and Fredericka, and Richards, Ambrosy and Fredericka. In February 2015, he transitioned to the bench, where he currently serves as the Trumbull County Probate Court Judge. He is also admitted to practice before the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit and the United States District Court for the Northern District of Ohio. A respected leader in the legal community, Fredericka served as the president of the Trumbull County Bar Association from 1998 to 1999. He has shared his expertise as a guest speaker for the National College of Probate Judges and the Ohio Association of Probate Judges and has been a member of the non-regular teaching staff at the University of Notre Dame.

His professional excellence is reflected in his AV Preeminent rating from Martindale-Hubbell and his inclusion in the top one percent of the American Registry’s America’s Most Honored Lawyers. In 2016, he was named Public Official of the Year by the National Association of Social Workers Ohio Chapter-Region IV. Judge Fredericka has also given much of his time and talent to local community organizations including Trumbull County Probate Veterans Assistance program, Trumbull County Senior Court Assistance program, and Guardian Angels of Trumbull County. He has also served as a past chairman of the Warren Civil Service Commission and sat as a Board member for the American Red Cross Trumbull County Chapter, Catholic Community Services, Inc., of Trumbull County, Notre Dame Schools, and St. John Paul II Parish board and finance council.

Judge Fredericka has been married to Lou Ann (Malone) Fredericka ’73 for 47 years. They have two children: Gina Marie ’09, a nurse and graduate of St. Mary’s College and Kent State University, and Michael James ’11, an attorney and graduate of the University of Notre Dame and the University of Akron School of Law.
