Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated honors Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, as an historic moment in American history. On June 19, 1865, news of the Emancipation Proclamation finally reached the last enslaved individuals in Galveston, Texas, marking the true beginning of freedom for all.

We proudly recognize the efforts of our own trailblazing Soror, Opal Lee, the “Grandmother of Juneteenth,” whose unwavering advocacy helped make Juneteenth a federally recognized holiday in 2021.

Today, we celebrate emancipation, reflect on our ancestors’ strength and resilience, and recommit to the work of advancing justice, equity, and unity. Through education, action, and solidarity, we move closer to a world rooted in true freedom for all.

For the Mothers of Detroit
From ARISE Detroit!

To the mothers of Detroit —
the sunrise risers,
the late-night prayers,
the steady hands holding neighborhoods together
one child, one block, one dream at a time.

You are the heartbeat beneath the city’s rhythm,
strong as steel, warm as Sunday dinners,
bright as murals painted across our streets.
You teach courage in silence,
love in sacrifice,
and hope even when the road feels long.

From east side porches to west side avenues,
from classrooms to kitchens, churches to community centers,
your strength echoes through every generation.
You lift families, guide futures,
and remind this city what resilience looks like.

Today, ARISE Detroit! celebrates you —
the mothers, grandmothers, aunties, mentors, and caregivers
whose love builds stronger communities every single day.

May you feel honored.
May you feel seen.
May you feel the gratitude of an entire city
standing beside you.

Happy Mother’s Day
to the incredible moms of Detroit.
Your love is the light that helps our city rise.
