This year’s Speaker of Honor at the Wantagh Warrior 9/11 Memorial 5K is retired NYC Fire Department (FDNY) Commissioner Dan Nigro who was appointed to Chief of Department after Chief Peter J. Ganci Jr. was killed at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. At the time, Chief Nigro was responsible for overseeing all rescue and recovery operations at the site, the rebuilding of the FDNY after losing 343 members, and is currently the fourth longest serving Fire Commissioner in FDNY history.

The Gary Sinise Foundation returns as the Gold Star sponsor continuing the partnership with the school district.

Standing in front of Wantagh Elementary School on a sunny, early August morning, Briana James was joyful and proud at having been appointed as the new principal. She returns to the Wantagh School District where she previously served as an elementary teacher and assistant principal.

Numerous construction projects are taking place across the district this summer to enhance our facilities. Several of the projects are funded through the voter-approved bond in December 2022, as well as through budget appropriations.

Some of the projects include:
Window replacements and HVAC upgrades at the high school and middle school.
Full renovation and expansion of the Wantagh High School library to incorporate rooms 150/152.
Hallway upgrades at the high school including new tile in cafeteria hallway, new ceilings and lighting in gymnasium hallway and new athletic display case.
Window and exterior door replacements, exterior wall reconstruction and HVAC upgrades and Forest Lake and Mandalay elementary schools.
Full renovation of six classroom bathrooms at Mandalay, and improvements to a pair of group bathrooms at middle school.
Painting of second floor high school hallways.
Construction of 9/11 memorial at high school.
Courtyard enhancements at high school.

Students in the Extended School Year Program participated in a "Sink or Float" science experiment where they made a guess before dropping the item into the water and then recorded the results afterwards.
