Two students who developed a passion for learning at a young age have been rewarded for their hard work, determination and exemplary character as the top two graduates of Wantagh High School’s Class of 2027. Lauren Furer, with a weighted grade point average of 109.417 is the valedictorian, and Matthew Como is the salutatorian with a GPA of 109.009.

The New York State School Boards Association recognizes School Board Recognition Week October 12 - 16, a dedicated time to promote awareness and understanding of the vital work performed by local school board members.

Public schools form the bedrock of our communities and our country. Democracy thrives with educated citizens capable of critical thinking and civil discourse, and local school boards are ultimately responsible for guiding student success.

School board members give Wantagh citizens a direct voice in education decision-making as they make a year-round commitment with their contribution.

Let’s honor the principals whose leadership and dedication inspire students every day. We are so excited to have Briana James, Principal of Wantagh Elementary School as our final honoree. We asked her a few questions about being a principal:

Q. Why did you become a principal?

A. I became a principal after years of teaching because I wanted to make a difference beyond the four walls of my own classroom. I love working with children, supporting teachers and partnering with families; it’s the best job there is!

Q. What are some of the funny things children have said?

A. “If you're the boss, do you still have to follow the rules?”
“Yes.”
“That's disappointing.”

“Do you have a boss?”
“Yes.”
“Wow. I thought you were the boss of everything.”

Congratulations to Wantagh High School senior Morgan Crespo on being named a Commended Student in the 2027 National Merit Scholarship program. She joins about 34,000 students across the United States to earn this distinction, which is based on scores on the 2025 PSAT. In addition to being an academically talented student, Morgan is active in student life as president of Science Olympiad and a member of the Key Club and varsity soccer team. Outside of school, she volunteers with Soccer Stars to help children with special needs play soccer.

Forest Lake Principal, Mr. Burke shared a few things with us about being a Principal:

Q: What is the most rewarding or favorite part of your day-to-day job?

A: My favorite part of the day is greeting the students in the morning. It's great to see their smiling faces as they walk into Forest Lake. It's a great time to see how excited they are for the day that awaits them.

Q: What’s the best part about being a principal?

A: The best part is being part of the Wantagh community and getting to experience the energy of our students every day. Watching them grow, take chances, overcome challenges, and accomplish things they are proud of makes this job special.

Q: What is the funniest thing a student has ever said to you?

A: There have been way too many funny moments over the years to pick just one! Students have a great way of keeping you humble, making you laugh, and reminding you not to take yourself too seriously.

Celebrating our Principals daily this week during National Principals Month, we recognize the impact principals have on students, staff, and communities nationwide. Below are a few questions we asked Mrs. Pisicchio:

Q: What is the most rewarding or favorite part of her day-to-day job?

A: Having a student ask me to sit with them in the cafeteria so they can talk to me.
Laughs and interactions with my staff. My team makes me fortunate to lead them every day!

Q: At the end of your career, what do you hope your students will say about your leadership?

A: She may have been tough at times, but she was fair. She cared and believed in me. Every child makes mistakes, but how we react and overcome the obstacles is the most important lesson.

Happy National Principals Month! Thank you to the incredible principals who lead with dedication and inspire students every day. Your impact is invaluable! Today, we want to put a spotlight on Mr. Anthony Ciuffo, Wantagh Middle School Principal by asking him a few questions:

Q: What’s the best part about being a principal?

A: The best part about being a principal is getting to interact with my students daily. I love walking around the building, popping into classrooms, interacting with students at lunch and recess, and just being present for our students. It is important to us that our students feel a strong sense of belonging when they walk through the doors of our school. That starts with a positive vibe and a visible leader. I love that I get to be that positive force along with my staff every day!

Q: What is the funniest thing a student has ever said to you?

A: I could share hundreds of funny things I’ve heard throughout my 26 years in Wantagh. The list is so long, but I will share two.

One was from many years ago and one was from this past week. The first one was when I was trying to “be cool” and fit in like a typical middle school student during one of our many spirit days. I said to a student, “See, isn’t your principal hip?” The student responded with, “Mr. Ciuffo, it’s really not hip to say the word hip.”

The second thing was last week when I was playing ping pong at recess with some of my students. After losing a few games in a row, I commented that there might be something wrong with my paddle. A student quickly responded with “I don’t think it’s the paddle.” ☹
