Mrs. Lane’s JAG 2 students worked together through one of the Five Career Associations, Community Service, to gain more insight and understanding about Children’s Cancer Awareness Month.

Students learned about the challenges children with cancer face and the importance of showing love, support, and encouragement. To share what they learned, students created a poster to place in the hallways with brief facts about childhood cancer.

They also encouraged other students to show their support by signing the poster and leaving an encouraging message for children who are currently fighting cancer or are survivors.

During the first week of school, Mrs. Lane JAG 1 students participated in an engaging “Getting to Know You” activities designed to build relationships, encourage teamwork, and create a welcoming classroom environment. Students took part in the Airplane Activity, where they write fun facts, interests, goals, or questions on paper airplanes and interact with classmates as they share and discover common interests. This activity helped students become comfortable with one another while establishing a positive, connected JAG community.

What does a young person need on the first day of school to have a job offer by the last one?

JAG affiliates spend the entire year answering that question, and the answer is never one thing.

A Specialist works with the same students all year on employability skills, workplace experience, and direct employer connections. Then they stay with those graduates for 12 months, well past the point where most school support ends.

The record backs the approach. In the 2024 program year, JAG served 84,195 young people, and 96 percent of JAG seniors graduated, compared with a national senior rate of 85 percent. 84% achieved a positive outcome, defined as employment, postsecondary enrollment, or both.

Last month in Long Beach, Specialists, employers, funders, and youth leaders spent three days at EDGE 2026 trading what actually works. This week, they carry it back into their classrooms.

That handoff, from a conference room in July to a first-period classroom in August, is where workforce development stops being a strategy document and starts being someone's future.
