Strive for balance in your child's schedule

Children need a balanced mix of schoolwork, outside activities, family time and free time. Don't worry about trying to cram everything your child has missed during the pandemic into this year. Instead, let your student explore one or two activities in depth. Children also need free time to play, read and explore ideas on their own, and family time to build supportive relationships.

Children learn by watching their parents. And when you talk about what you are doing, you make it easier for your child to learn. If you are cooking, for example, you might say, "I'm looking for a cake recipe. I don't have time to read all the recipes in this cookbook, so I'm going to turn to the index in the back. Hereunder the letter C is a recipe for chocolate cake." Now your child understands more about how an index works.

Balance negativity by pointing out the positive

Is your child a "glass-half-empty" kind of kid? Some people are more pessimistic than others by nature. But that doesn't mean you can't help your child see the sunnier side of life. Remind him of good times and successes he's had. And if he says he'll never understand something, sit down and offer support as he figures it out. Show him that he can solve "impossible" problems if he keeps trying.

Review the moves for making friends

Making new friends isn't always easy, and these days, many children need some help with this. Remind your child that when looking for friends, it often helps to make the first move. Encourage her to say "hi" and show an interest in other people. She might ask someone to play a game or eat with her. Then she can share stories about things she's seen or done so the person can get to know her better. Having friends at school can boost your child's enthusiasm for education.
