On paper, the 2026 season opener looked like it would be better suited for a November playoff date. With Strath Haven and Chester totaling four appearances in the last five District 1 5A title games, testing both teams with a head-to-head matchup in Week One after just a few weeks of practices was a tall task for both teams. And sometimes what is “on paper” lives up to the billing, and the Panthers and Clippers went toe-to-toe in a fast and physical slugfest that saw Chester claim a 22-10 victory.

Both teams started the game with momentum changing plays, as a big hit from Haven’s Tyler Slaughter on the opening kickoff jarred the ball from the arms of Chester’s Sekai Brown Murray. Cole Haly’s recovery set up the Panthers on the edge of the red zone, only to see Chester’s outstanding defensive tackle, #5 Zion Santana, pounce on a fumbled exchange on the very next snap.

Wasn't the outcome we wanted but it was a heck of a fight. Chester was overwhelming in the first half but our guys kept fighting back and almost pulled off a score to lead in the 4th but Chester played it well and locked this one down. The 50 Yardline - Week 1 - Chester

As summer winds down and fall arrives, optimism abounds for the hundreds of high school football teams across the commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Closest to home, the Strath Haven Panthers have that same feeling, as several decades of success continued last season with another solid playoff run. And with several key players and a stalwart coaching staff returning, the Panthers will start the 2026 party by hosting a big, non-league test from Del-Val powerhouse Chester.

Chester Head Coach Dennis Shaw and the Clippers arrive fresh off a 13-1 record and an appearance in last year’s District 1 5A final and are looking to reload and repeat a deep postseason run. With several talented, multi-year starters lost to graduation, it would be easy to think Chester may take a step back this season. But with a few transfers joining returning college prospects #3 Sire Hall and #7 Sekai Brown-Murray returning in the defensive secondary and as receiving targets, the Clippers expect to have big-play ability on both sides of the ball. In addition #51 Zyon Santana returns as a game-wrecker at both defensive end (2nd team All-State last year) and running back, while Jacoby Roman, Jabrae Davis, and Solomon Dodson bring size and experience in the trenches. Shane McLain returns at linebacker and will be expected to lead a defense that allowed just seven points per game and posted six shutouts last season. (go to Havenfootball.net for the full article)

Haven has solid outing in today’s scrimmage

The rain subsided just in time for the 2026 Strath Haven Panthers and West Chester East Vikings to battle in a spirited scrimmage on Saturday morning.

While no official score was kept, Panther fans had plenty of reasons to smile, beginning with an aggressive and quick defensive unit. The Panthers’ defensive starters kept West Chester East from crossing midfield in either of their 10-play series, and the younger Strath Haven defenders who appeared later in the scrimmage also kept the Vikings out of the end zone.
