As Autism Awareness Month comes to an end, we would like to share information about the Blue Envelope Program.

The Blue Envelope Program is a collaboration between Massachusetts law enforcement agencies, autism advocacy groups, and families. It is designed to reduce stress and miscommunication during traffic stops involving drivers on the autism spectrum. The blue envelope helps signal to officers that a driver may communicate differently, allowing officers to respond with patience, clarity, and understanding. The program's goals are to enhance understanding, reduce anxiety, and improve safety for both drivers and police officers.

Contents & How It's Used
β€’ Contains copies of the driver's license and vehicle registration
β€’ Provides communication tips for officers on the outside of the envelope
β€’ Helps explain that behaviors such as delayed responses, limited eye contact, or unusual speech may be related to autism
β€’ May also include an emergency contact if assistance is needed
β€’ Keep the Blue Envelope in an easily accessible location, such as the driver-side sun visor
β€’ Present it during a traffic stop to help officers respond appropriately

Who Can Request It?
β€’ Any Massachusetts resident with autism
β€’ For minors, a parent or guardian may request it on their behalf
β€’ Envelopes are free and can be requested online
β€’ Envelopes can only be mailed to Massachusetts addresses
