CALLING ALL LOCAL SOCCER PLAYERS!!

Wakefield Soccer Association is happy to announce the next session of TOP Soccer (The Outreach Program for Soccer), a free recreational soccer program for athletes with physical and/or intellectual disabilities. TOP Soccer provides people with diverse abilities an opportunity to play soccer in a structured environment that is safe, fun, supportive, and inclusive.

Day: Sundays, from September 13 to November 1 (8 sessions)

Time: 2- 3 PM

Location: Gavin Middle School- Turf Fields

🧠 I AM 6 | The Brain Development Behind What You See

At six years old, children are becoming more independent, more curious and more aware of the world around them. Their brain is making millions of connections, helping them learn new skills, solve problems and build friendships.

Although they may seem “grown up,” the part of the brain responsible for planning ahead, managing emotions, controlling impulses and thinking flexibly is still developing. They often know what they should do but still need support to do it consistently.

This is why six-year-olds can be wonderfully thoughtful one moment and overwhelmed the next. They continue to learn through encouragement, repetition, routines and feeling safe with the adults around them.

Understanding how the brain develops helps us see behaviour differently. Instead of asking, “Why are they doing that?” we begin to ask, “What skills is their brain still learning?”

This is Age 6 in our Brain Development Series, following children’s development from ages 3–25.

At five years old, a child’s brain is becoming more organised, more curious and more independent—but it is still very much under construction.

They may seem capable one moment and overwhelmed the next. They ask endless questions, want to understand how things work, and are beginning to think ahead, solve problems and make sense of the world around them. Yet they still need support with managing big feelings, waiting, flexibility and self-control.

What looks like “not listening,” frustration or forgetfulness is often a reflection of a brain that is still developing the skills needed for emotional regulation, planning and impulse control.

When we understand what is happening inside a child’s developing brain, it becomes easier to respond with patience, connection and realistic expectations.

This is Age 5 in our Brain Development Series, following the journey from ages 3–25.

At four years old, my brain is growing at an incredible pace.

Every day I am making new connections through play, movement, curiosity and the people who care for me. I ask endless questions, have a huge imagination and experience big emotions because the parts of my brain responsible for planning, self-control and managing feelings are still developing.

Sometimes what looks like “challenging behaviour” is simply my brain learning how to cope with a big world.

When we understand the development behind what we see, we become more patient, more connected and better able to support children as they grow.

This is the latest resource in The Brain Development Series (Ages 3 - 25 years) – helping adults look beyond behaviour and understand the child underneath.

That’s why we’re starting a brand new series.

From age 3 right through to age 25, we’ll be exploring how the brain develops, what that can look like in everyday life, and the simple things that help children and young people thrive.

Today’s post begins at age 3—a time when curiosity explodes, emotions are big, independence blossoms and little brains are making millions of new connections every day.

Every child develops at their own pace, so these posts aren’t intended as milestones that every child must reach by a certain age. Instead, they’re designed to help you understand the development behind what you see.
