A very fair and common question I see on my content, dms and even other OE3 creators posts asking about what’s on the general knowledge test. Absolutely not taking a dig at anyone but one of the things I notice about the truly great operators is that they are proactive self starters with some amazing critical thinking and problem solving skills.

I’d encourage anyone who is serious about this opportunity to start practicing those skills now starting with the upcoming general knowledge test. Even if you don’t get in or place high, practicing those types of skills now will only make you better for your next great opportunity.

I hesitate to give answers but love to share starting off points for you to work from. It’s up to you how far you want to take it and how much effort your putting in.

A little recap of this weeks “Meet the legislators” dinner hosted by HOEISF open to local 3 members and their families.

These dinners give the members a chance to meet and talk with our local politicians endorsed by our union. Goes hand in hand with our Political Action Committee and the work they do to interview and select labor-friendly leaders.

Bout to really hurt some feelings but I’m sick of this narrative I’ve been hearing for YEARS and some people don’t like me anyways so F it. Everyone wants to throw shade at the training site. But let’s look at the numbers here.

Apprentices are required to do:

1. HEAVY DUTY REPAIRER (HDR) AND WELDER
8,520 training hours are required, consisting of:
8,000 on-the-job training hours
520 hours of Supplemental Related Training (SRT)
2. CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT OPERATOR (CEO)
6,520 training hours are required, consisting of:
6,000 on-the-job training hours
520 hours of SRT
3. PAVING EQUIPMENT OPERATOR (PEO)
4,440 training hours are required, consisting of:
4,000 on-the-job training hours
440 hours of SRT

Majority of the time apprentice’s spend during the program are out there in the field with their journeyman and the other crafts. If you’re the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with than what is that really saying when you’re speaking poorly of your apprentices?

Anyways, just making trouble. I’m excited for everyone who applied for the 2026 OE3 Hawai’i apprenticeship program for the island of O’ahu. Now the real work begins. Prepping for the general knowledge test and panel interview. I’ve got a few posts up already with some tips for both, you gotta scroll down and look.
