🌟 Please join us!

🇵🇭 The Philippine Celebrations Coordinating Committee of Hawai‘i, in collaboration with the Filipino Curriculum Project and the University of Hawai‘i, Mānoa's Center for Philippine Studies, proudly invites the community to the Sakada Day Celebration on Saturday, December 21, 2024, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM at Hawaii's Plantation Village in Waipahu.

🌟 This exciting event honors the resilience, contributions, and cultural impact of Hawaii’s Filipino Sakadas—migrant plantation workers whose enduring legacy continues to shape the Filipino American experience today.

🌟 EVENT HIGHLIGHTS

Attendees will enjoy a vibrant day filled with:

· 🎤 Live Performances – Celebrate Filipino culture through music and dance.

· 🍽️ Food Trucks – Savor Filipino cuisine from local Filipino vendors.

· 📚 Interactive Booths – Explore cultural exhibits and educational displays from students and community groups.

🌟 This year is especially meaningful as the event will highlight students who are part of the Filipino history course in four Hawaiʻi high schools: Farrington, Waipahu, Dreamhouse Ewa Beach Charter, and Lanai High Schools. Filipino Curriculum Project students will showcase Sakada-themed art, exhibits, oral histories, and live performances at Hawaii's Plantation Village.

🎟️ Admission to the Hawaiʻi Plantation Village will be free on that day and attendees will be able to access all the various exhibits.

‘THEIR STORY MUST BE TOLD’

Aside from the remarkable Larry Itliong of the Delano Grape Strike, there is also an important figure in Hawai’i whose story is unknown to many. This Filipino-American History Month, let’s unravel the story of the late Pablo Manlapit from Batangas, and the forgotten massacre in Hanapepe, island of Kauai, where 16 Filipino plantation workers died.

The Filipino Curriculum will be comprised of 3 main units which are Historical Context, Cultures and Connections, and Filipinos in Hawaii.

As we weave through each unit, our overall theme “Identity” is what we account for on how we want to teach the students about who they are no matter the race or ethnicity and how they can tie back to our culture.

Help us trailblaze a path for a better educational future!

Despite being the largest Asian group in Hawaii, Filipinos are still underrepresented. According to the University of Hawaii, Filipinos make up 25% of the state’s population. In addition, 23% of students in Hawaii are Filipinos. Having representation is very critical.

Spread the word out. Salamat!
