I am going to try and write comprehensive stories highlighting our student athletes on this page. While I will not get every event, I will try and do a variety of games and write more in depth stories than you will find in other sources.

Wolverines return to winning ways against Huskies

After a rare two match losing streak, the Wolverine Volleyball team returned to their winning ways as they started conference play with the Pillager Huskies on Thursday night, September 4th in the Den. The Wolverines quickly dispatched of the Huskies 3-0, winning the sets 25-14, 25-14, and 25-20.

"I was proud of the way we bounced back after a tough loss on Tuesday, " said Head Coach Courtney Tumberg. "We played well on the offensive and defensive side of the net. I thought we had some awesome hustle plays, and I love to see the scrappiness on defense."

Once again, the Wolverines had a balanced offensive attack. The tandem of senior Kennedy Ness and junior Payton Gravelle each had 11 kills. Both players showed their multidimensional prowess as Ness picked up seven digs and Gravelle six. Ness also had an ace serve and two blocks.

The Wolverine attack is driven by first year varsity starting setter, Ashley Pavek. The senior moved back to full time setting this year after being a hitter for the varsity team last year as. the Wolverines were led by long time starter Addy Gravelle. Pavek had an outstanding game. She contributed 33 assists, as well as three kills, two digs and four ace serves, stats that will bode well for the Wolverine attack as they move forward.

The Huskies are a much improved squad and boast 100 girls in their 7-12 program. The Wolverines easily pulled away from them early in both the first and second sets before rallying from an 11-8 third set deficit to take the match. After struggling with some unforced errors in the DGF match on Tuesday, the Wolverines were able to keep their attacks in bounds against the Huskies, contributing to the sweep.

Jada Dykhoff contributed six kills, eight digs, and five aces. Celia Rinio had three kills and a block, Ava Hall two kills and four digs, and Tori Mallak had a kill. Avery Lepinski had a fine game from the Libero spot, notching seven digs and an assist while Leah Kircher had an ace and four digs.

"We need to continue to get better each day and keep working towards our end goals," said Tumberg. "Tonight was a great step in that direction. We get another opportunity to see how we stack up this weekend at the Sauk Rapids Tournament."
