It’s time the courts REALLY start listening when the victim says “my abuser is going to kill me or someone else!”
This suspect should not have been on the streets.

THIS STORY JUST GOT BIGGER.

Now look at what police say happened Saturday.

Officers were initially called after a woman reported a domestic dispute involving Dowdy. She told police she had a RESTRAINING ORDER AGAINST HIM and said he had been inside her home damaging property.

Officer Christopher DeLong responded.

A short time later, officers encountered Dowdy near a vehicle matching the description they had been given.

Gunfire followed.

OFFICER DELONG WAS KILLED.

Officer David Dymock was also shot and survived.

Dowdy was killed during the incident.

His partner had just been shot and killed by a domestic abuser. Even though this officer was receiving treatment for his gunshot wounds received during the altercation, he insisted they let him go outside for the procession for a fallen brother. That’s a hero.

They damn well do, and rightfully so! We also train our law enforcement officers to arrest abusers when they have probable cause. People like this are the reason we strictly enforce domestic violence laws. Another human being is NOT your property to treat as a punching bag.

This is absolutely heartbreaking. Just one of many reasons we now discuss “When Their Trauma Becomes Ours” during our training. We have to get a handle on the mental health crisis associated with dealing with trauma every day, as many of our attendees do in their line of work. Regardless of job title—law enforcement, advocates, counselors, social workers, etc.—it takes a toll on all of us.
