By 1845, Old Town had exactly one retail store, and it belonged to a Yankee sea captain who had become a Mexican citizen and a Catholic named Enrique. 🏪

Henry Delano Fitch, a native of New Bedford, Massachusetts, came to California in the late 1820s as master of the brig María Ester. He declared his intention to become a Mexican citizen in 1827, was naturalized in 1833, and was baptized in San Diego the next year as Enrique Domingo Fitch. His general store in Old Town traded in hides, tallow and furs, and he partnered at different times with Stearns, McKinley, Temple and Paty. In 1830 and 1831 he commanded the Leonor, which carried 50 convicts to San Diego, 23 of whom stayed.

Fitch also took public roles. He served as San Diego's first syndic in 1835, and in 1845 he produced the first official survey and map of the pueblo lands. He and Josefa Carrillo raised eleven children, born between 1830 and 1848.

He died in 1849 and was the last person buried on Presidio Hill. Which do you think shaped early San Diego more, the soldiers who held the hill or the merchants who stocked the town?
