These are all helpful ways parents and children can start to learn about AI. I am still focused on making sure that VBCPS constructs an effective governance model around AI and how it is implemented in the school system, informed by experts in the field, instructional professionals with education backgrounds and community members who have a stake in making sure that their children will be stewards (and unafraid) of the technology. Thanks for sharing, Natalie.

I believe that our slate of candidates will bring this thoughtful approach to technology use in VBSchools and I hope you’ll support putting educators and experience first when deciding who to support this fall to be leaders for our school system!

Grateful for the time spent today with Dr. Keith Hayward, the new pastor at Mount Zion African Methodist Episcopal Church of Virginia Beach and extending a warm welcome to our District 2 community. Conversations like these are exactly why I’m running — the more I hear from the people who make up this community, the better prepared I’ll be to serve it. Looking forward to meeting more neighbors and community members in the weeks ahead.

What a great turnout at the meet and greet hosted by Melinda Rogers for School Board- Virginia Beach and Josh! Thank you to everyone who came out to talk schools, ask hard questions, and share what matters to you and your families. Conversations like these, neighbor to neighbor, are exactly why I'm running. Grateful to Melinda for bringing our community together, and grateful to District 2 for showing up.

It also means so much to have the support of current School Board members Melinda Rogers, Kim Melnyk, Elect Dr. Alveta Green Virginia Beach City School Board District 4, Sharon Felton, and Matt Cummings -- these are the folks who are DOING the work and know what the job actually requires and I am grateful for their votes of confidence.

Met many wonderful people attending today… shout out to my Tae Kwon Do friend and mom and fútbol dad and son talking about how we continue to find our local organizations that can be those third spaces for our kids.

Care fair is truly an amazing collection of so many service organizations offering help and activities for our district families…taking care of and looking out for each other…is the best of what public schools are about (and a little bit about driving the bus 😉🚌 and meeting cool characters like The Captain and Friends network 😊).

Every August, no matter how many years passed, watching our kids take in that first-day-of-school feeling — the mix of nerves and excitement on their faces as they headed out the door, never ceased to amaze me -- the resilience to approach each year with a fresh perspective knowing it won't be the same as the year before.

My two kids both had the public school experience and went on to attend public universities. And watching them grow into who they are now is still the proudest thing we've done, as parents. It's also why I can't just watch from the sidelines when I see some decisions being made that don't reflect what's best for our students and teachers.

I spent 30+ years working inside public education because I believe in what it can do for all children. That belief hasn't changed — it's why I'm running for School Board to represent you from District 2.

I’m a forever curious person. And these days, I am most curious about the best ways to plan our paths forward, given that technology is always evolving…in education we love to develop plans and stick to them…but the world evolves all around us — whether we like it or not — and as I’ve said to people close to me who want to wish away the challenges we face today, we must figure out how live in the world we live in, not the one we wished we lived in. But to that point, I’ll now add this common misconception—that doing that doesn’t mean we don’t have to figure out how to be more agile in what and how we teach to the next generation of entrepreneurs and digital citizens who will be shaping our futures.

So with that, I share with you a Substack post for teachers (and, possibly, curriculum developers) on additional ways to think about AI that helps us learn to see it in a bigger way… Enjoy!
