Tonight's George Mason University 💚💛 alumni virtual panel discussion (moderated by Philip Wilkerson III, M.Ed, DTM) on 'Networking' was a fantastic precursor for next week's Alumni Student Networking Mixer, where students will have the opportunity to practice their networking skills and connect with alumni volunteers. The webinar was a collaboration between George Mason University Alumni Association and University Career Services, George Mason University. Below are a few tips shared by my fellow alumni panelists and me:
➢Networking isn’t a bad word.
➢Have a plan and goals (e.g., meet three to four people). Book recommendation: Measure What Matters by John Doerr
➢We have two ears and one mouth (always a great reminder!). In other words: listen, listen, listen. Note: Introverts are often great listeners, potentially giving them an advantage as networkers.
➢Be intentional about networking.
➢Approach every interaction with curiosity about the people you meet.
➢Follow up fast; within 48 hours if possible.
➢Block time on your calendar for follow-ups.
➢Avoid asking, “Tell me about yourself.” It’s too broad of a question. But be prepared to answer it if someone asks you.
➢Another book recommendation: Never Eat Alone by Keith Ferrazzi
Happy networking!

Every great leader needs an example, even if it’s a bad one. While dealing with foolish leaders can be frustrating and exhausting (to say the least), the smartest ones know how to learn from both. Mistakes, whether ours or others', are just lessons in disguise. The key is paying attention, adapting, and leading better because of them. hashtag hashtag hashtag hashtag hashtag hashtag

Last night’s Graduate and Professional Student Networking Reception at the Mason Square Campus, was a great opportunity for George Mason University alumni (I earned my MBA from GMU) to PayItForward by supporting current students as they honed their networking skills. I donned my PatriotPride business casual look in honor of GMU’s first-ever A-10 Women's Basketball Championship Title! 💚 💛 🏆

Courage: A High-Value Leadership Currency
I’ve come to recognize a troubling trend that extends across industries and professional roles—a growing erosion of courage. Whether it’s in boardrooms, project meetings, or one-on-one interactions, I am seeing a reluctance to act with the fortitude and integrity that are the hallmarks of busi...
