4 ways to use Virtual Reality in project-based learning – Innovative Education in Vermont 05/20/2026

Virtual reality isn’t just a cool classroom gimmick — it’s a gateway to deeper learning. 🌍🥽

A recent piece on VR in project-based learning highlighted how immersive experiences can spark curiosity, deepen research, and turn students from passive learners into active creators.

That’s exactly the kind of future-focused learning we believe in at CadetNet Virtual Academy.

Whether students are exploring global issues, collaborating on real-world projects, or building career-ready skills in a virtual environment, learning should feel engaging, meaningful, and alive — not confined to a worksheet.

At CadetNet, technology isn’t replacing great teaching. It’s amplifying it.

So why aren’t we using ...

One of the most meaningful parts of building CadetNet has been hearing from families whose children are finally feeling excited, engaged, and understood in their learning experience again.

This quote came from a parent reflecting on what it meant for their son to learn alongside educators and researchers creating programs designed to truly support students who learn differently.

At CadetNet, we believe learning should be:
• engaging
• accessible
• student-centered
• and rooted in meaningful human connection

We’re grateful to the families who trust us to be part of their journey and continue helping shape the future of innovative virtual learning.

What’s something that made a learning experience memorable or impactful for you growing up? ⬇️

“What would it feel like to experience the Lewis and Clark Expedition in real time?” 🧭

As part of their study of the expedition, CadetNet students worked with actual journal entries from Lewis and Clark’s journey and transformed them into immersive visual scenes. From the surprise discovery of prairie dogs, to moments around the campfire, to finally reaching the Pacific Ocean — students brought history to life through creativity, interpretation, and technology.

Instead of simply reading about the expedition, students analyzed primary sources, visualized key moments, and explored the emotions, challenges, and discoveries behind the journey itself.

Experiences like this help students build deeper understanding while strengthening critical thinking, creativity, and engagement with the material in a way that lasts beyond a quiz or worksheet.

At CadetNet, learning goes beyond the page. Students study it, see it, and experience it. 💻✨

If you could step into any historical moment for one day, which would you choose? ⬇️

Math students in CadetNet have been working on finding Volume and Surface area of different three-dimensional shapes. Students traveled to the Pyramids of Giza to practice their skills not only for finding volume and surface area of square-based pyramids, but also for rectangular prisms, cones, cylinders, and cubes! They also practiced using cubed units for volume and square units for surface area!

CadetNet's Summer Program brought learning to life through virtual reality! Using VR headsets, students explored immersive environments that made learning feel like an adventure.
Science students explored Virginia’s native plants and pollinators, discovering how important they are to biodiversity. They even created their own backyard firefly habitats to help protect these incredible insects.

Math students are developing real-world problem-solving skills by working in a virtual farming simulation. They used math concepts like probability and equations to grow “probability gardens,” learning how likely different outcomes are in a hands-on, engaging way.

Language arts students are journeying through literary genres by building their own fantasy worlds. They read excerpts from Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief and explored the themes and imagination behind this beloved series.
Social studies students are time-traveling to meet famous historical and cultural figures. They visited the Globe Theatre to perform a scene from Romeo and Juliet alongside William Shakespeare himself, then toured an art museum to see the works of Vincent van Gogh—and even created their own van Gogh-inspired masterpieces!

In our CadetNet Virtual Academy Math class, students created storefronts to practice rates and units. Each student designed their own shop based on their interests and are working to price out their merchandise. Once our stores are complete, they will go around to their classmates' stores and solve the unit rate problems created by each store owner. This is just one way that we have been using VR to practice our math skills so far this year!

This week at CadetNet Virtual Academy, middle schoolers kicked off their geography unit by diving into physical maps and the natural features of North America — a foundational step for understanding U.S. history.

Using VR technology, students explored the continent’s geography, equipped with a guide map and their own blank maps to label and color-code. They identified mountains, rivers, plains, and other key landforms, gaining insight into how geography has shaped historical events.

CadetNet Virtual Academy students practiced math skills at a virtual construction site! Working in pairs, they reviewed proportions, solved word problems using VR tools, and used virtual building materials as manipulatives to show their work and find solutions.

CadetNet math students recently took on proportional relationships!

Each student designed their own real-world scenario—think fossils, Xbox games, dog walking, and book subscriptions—and proved it was proportional using tables and graphs. They found the constant of proportionality and graphed a straight line through the origin like pros. So much creativity and math in action!

The CadetNet team conducted a study from our 2024-25 summer program that involved understanding how the curriculum was like a theatrical presentation where students interact with and recreate moving narratives (e.g., a farmers market stall to learn about equations, an escape room to solve a mystery) through videoconferencing and VR activities. Results from implementation during the summer, show a maintenance of academic scores over the summer, and increased motivation for both collaborative and individual learning.

The study has been published in the latest issue of Cybernetics & Human Knowing, distributed by Imprint Publishing (UK), available in print this winter!
