These grade 5 students from the Savannalamar Inclusive Academy in Negril, Jamaica had the chance to build and code with the Climate Action Kit and explore real-world projects.

Special thank you to Aniccia Walker for sharing these photos with us. The Savannalamar Inclusive Academy is funded by Rockhouse Foundation, an organization dedicated to investing in building schools and transforming education in Jamaica.

Today we worked with the students for a soldering and coding workshop using the Smart Soldering Kit and new Coding for Good Kit from Forward Education.

These Grade 9 students just started learning about electrical circuits. They put that knowledge of circuits to work by soldering their own robotic component which they then could code using and MakeCode.

We often get asked how to remove your micro:bit from the rechargeable CHARGE⚡️ battery pack, so here’s a quick demo.

Other common CHARGE FAQs:
1️⃣ Why use CHARGE over the regular battery pack? The CHARGE for micro:bit is the only rechargeable and wearable wrist strap for micro:bit. You’ll never need to purchase disposable batteries again to power your micro:bit projects.

2️⃣ Does it come with the wrist strap? Yes!

3️⃣ Does it have an on/off switch? Yes!

4️⃣ What sort of projects is it useful for? CHARGE is incredibly useful in any micro:bit projects where you want to be mobile. Think step counter, compass or any other outdoor activity. CHARGE is especially useful in any CreateAI project. It helps to keep the micro:bit secure on your wrist when creating your training data for the machine learning model.

📝 Tips for this CreateAI activity:

- Choose distinct letters
- Ensure the micro:bit is positioned on the market in the same direction the whole time
- Record a “resting” action where the marker is being held up but not moving as a control

Disclaimer: This activity won’t recognize all hand written letters perfectly, but the process of testing different letters and understanding why the model has a hard time recognizing them (because the data samples are similar) is all part of the learning process!

This activity was inspired by Zahra Razi’s computer science class students.
