This morning, Tony Morrison from the Wood County Prevention Coalition, spoke to the Wood County Rotary Club at the Vienna Community Building in Jackson Park. Tony spoke of their concerns for drug prevention among our youth and their efforts to join forces with other local organizations that have that same desire. Their mission is to serve youth living in Wood County by promoting youth wellness through positive youth development, and increasing positive youth behaviors, thus reducing at-risk behaviors, including harmful substances. As a recently established 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, they are seeking grants and partnerships with 12 sectors in our county to further their goals and support the youth of this area to live happy, healthy and productive lives. Monthly open meetings are held on the third Friday each month at 9 AM at the Vienna Police Annex and a Zoom option is available for those who cannot attend in person. Their desire is to bring many local community organizations together to work toward their common goals of raising awareness of youth needs and providing them with positive direction. This past Saturday, members of the Wood County Rotary Club attended the Community Resource Fair held in Spencer Park in Vienna. Chris Poe, Chris Truman and Michelle Curtis (also Executive Director with The Arc of the Mid-Ohio Valley) were on hand to share information about Rotary and the impact that it has serving in our community. Our club meets Thursday mornings beginning at 7:30 AM at the Vienna Community Building in Jackson Park. We welcome potential members to join us as we enjoy a weekly speaker and learn of ways to serve in our community. .

This morning, Ammie Rasmussen, EF International Exchange Coordinator for EF High School Exchange Year and Habitat For Humanity Volunteer/Coordinator and Resource Development Associate, spoke to the Wood County Rotary Club at the Vienna Community Building in Jackson Park. Ammie spoke about the six exchange students coming to the Mid-Ohio Valley through the exchange program that began in 1979. Since its inception, the organization has conducted for that 60,000 international students with caring host families across America. Rotary Youth Exchange also is involved with similar programs and goals that contribute to diplomacy, create multinational friendships and enrich student life. As a world leader in international education, EF Education First offers cultural experiences, educational tours, language courses and academic achievement programs that transform dreams into international opportunities. Their global presence spans 100 countries and over one million people experience their programs annually. They offer language courses, academic and degree programs, cultural experiences and educational travel opportunities that add value to the lives of many young people. EF, Habitat and Rotary are all involved in helping others have opportunities to build a better life and future. Helping people is a common thread that reflects that real change happens through relationships. This morning, Rachel Elliott, Program Director from Consumer Credit Counseling Service of the Mid-Ohio Valley, spoke to The Wood County Rotary Club at the Vienna Community Building in Jackson Park. Rachel spoke of their mission of financial literacy and how CCCS serves many individuals in the MOV to provide a fix for a variety of financial challenges many face. From teaching young people about “the game of life” and making good financial decisions to collaborative efforts with local businesses that provide direction on making informed decisions about financial matters. There are no charges for the services provided by CCCS. They receive grants that help them provide many services and their representative payee program through Social Security allows a minimal fee to be charged. They offer debt counseling services and help set up programs with their clients to help get debt paid off in a realistic timeframe. Annually, CCCS serves over 2500 individuals in the MOV with offices in Parkersburg, Ripley and Charleston. On November 7, they will hold their annual Mystery Dinner at Grand Pointe Conference Center and they also hold an annual golf tournament that help them provide their much needed services. Wood County Rotary welcomed Jessica Sanchez and Janetta Ross of Women's Care Center at this morning's meeting. The center offers expanded services, no cost medical services, ultrasounds, testing, connection to physicians, STD treatment, help with medical insurance and many additional resources. The staff has expanded into Jackson, Wirt and Ritchie Counties with their mobile office, offering many of the same services to those residents who now do not need to travel the long distance to Wood County. There is an available online patient portal offered on the nonprofit's website which can be used for more information and to make appointments for the various services.
Clients can shop once a month in the clothing boutique for baby and mothers' supplies (baby to 18 months old). Counseling is offered in office and on the bus. Mentoring is also offered in the fixed site and mobile unit. Points can be earned by clients for participating in healthy activities which can translate into such items as car seats, strollers, and cribs. (Gently used and new items are accepted for this program.) Women's Care Center also offers Stronger Father programming. WCC has purchased neighboring land and is planning to add additional clinic space and a garage. WCC continues to provide school education on healthy relationships.
Women's Care Center has been in Parkersburg for 35 years with expansion into additional counties through the purchase of the grant-funded Mobile Unit. Each year they provide more than 350 ultrasounds, 450 pregnancy tests, and serve more than 600 unique patients. Their greatest need is hygiene items for babies. The next fundraiser is the Health Walk for Life at Parkersburg City Park@12:30 on October 18th.
