Rosario thinks people talk about her because she is a winner. A winner at what? Racism? Bigotry? Ableism? Hate? Well she certainly is a winner at hypocrisy.

No wonder the Moms for Hate like to go to school board meetings and read paragraphs with sexual content.

IRC has an AMAZING school board chair in Doc Jones. If you believe in public education and oppose the those trying to destroy it through lies and ignorance, share this letter widely. Send it to anyone you think needs to read it. Fight for what is right. Read her letter here:

Commissioner of Education
Tallahassee, Florida
August 1, 2023

Dear Commissioner Diaz,

It is with great concern I write to you today as a School Board Chair in Florida. I have several concerns with the new African American History standards, but I will specifically focus within this communication on Standard 68, AA, 2.3 and the Clarification of that Standard in the new AA History Standards just released. Please know this is just my opinion and not the opinion of the Indian River County School Board.

The standard is to be implemented in the middle grades, and it states the following: Examine the various duties and trades performed by slaves (agricultural work, painting, carpeting, tailoring, domestic service, blacksmithing, and transportation).

Directly below this standard is the Clarification:

Instruction includes how slaves developed skills which, in some instances, could be applied for their personal benefit.

I ask that you delete this standard as I do not think any African American family in America really believes what their ancestors were forced to do, or, in many cases, sold to do, was any kind of choice. To call them duties is also preposterous. This nation has extensive evidence about how slaves were treated. They were given strict orders of what to do or they were beaten, lynched, r***d, or any number of other inhumane treatments. We are talking about a race of people who were forcibly removed from their homeland and enslaved from the mid-16th century to 1867 in North America, South America, and Europe.

I also reviewed your letter to the Superintendents when you stated President Biden and Vice-President Harris, and Education Secretary Miguel Cardona, were all wrong in their interpretations of this standard. They are not wrong. And sadly, this is now political, and people will stand in their corners, but know that most people think this is terribly wrong for many reasons.

Your last paragraph in your memo to the Superintendents stated you wanted the implementation of these standards to be swift, transparent, and honest. This standard does not fit the bill of honesty. And your final sentence stating this will “accrue to the benefit of our students,” well, I could not disagree more. The exact opposite will happen. This will be harmful to our students.

I am a proud supporter of public education, and I will begin my 50th year in the public-school arena in 2024. I have served as a teacher, Dean, Assistant Principal, Principal of two middle Schools and one High School, Executive Director of Secondary, Principal Consultant, and now I am School Board Chair in Indian River County. I say this because I have dedicated my entire life to public education, a system that mandates accountability and truth to our taxpayers. This standard is not truth in any manner.

The parental rights bill states the following: A parent can withhold their child from any portion of a curriculum if they believe such material is harmful. I would not allow my children or grandchildren to listen to this material. This is harmful because we are not telling the truth. It is truly unconscionable saying that slaves learned a skill later for life. This standard is simply an embarrassing mark on our state. In my career, I have been in many leadership positions. I know Doing things right is good, but Doing the right thing is much better. Do the right thing and delete this standard and the clarification of this standard.

I ask that you quickly regroup with this committee and State Board to delete this standard. I also ask that you call in representatives from our state and local NAACP branches for input on all of these African American Standards. When I receive questions from my constituents, I will share with them this letter, and I will also ask that they, too, write to you, the Governor, and the State Board. I will also remind them they also have the option of pulling their children out of class when this standard is being taught. As a side note, the committee members who worked on these standards are clearly saying most did not agree with this standard or clarification. Only two out of the thirteen agreed with this standard, and now it seems like blame is being passed all around.

I leave you with this: Can you imagine an African American student sitting in a middle school class when the teacher states that slaves developed skills, which in some instances, could be applied for their personal benefit? I cannot. In addition, can you imagine an African American teacher required to teach this? I cannot. I also cannot imagine any student of any race learning this information or any teacher of any race teaching this information. In summary, I will not support the teaching of this standard if this remains in our curriculum.

We can never judge anything we have not experienced. Let the History books show that you, as the Commissioner of Education, did the right thing in this situation. A true leader knows when to change something that is just not right.

Regards,
Peggy Jones, Ed D, School Board Chair
Indian River County School District

CC: Governor DeSantis
State Board of Education/Florida

History matters. Truth matters. People trying to ban books to hide history and truth are pathetic cowards.

BANNED. I just found out the book I illustrated the cover for was banned in Florida! It's crazy how long authentic Native voices have been kept out of the publishing world, and when we're finally able to get big publishers to print our work, our true stories are "challenged" and banned.

Please make sure school libraries, public libraries are including Native authors and illustrators in their collection. You can see the whole list of Native voices who are being silenced here: https://americanindiansinchildrensliterature.blogspot.com/2023/04/book-bans-and-native-voices.html

"Indian No More" is about a young girl whose tribe was "terminated" in 1954. In the 1940s-1960s, the federal government would terminate reservations and force Natives to relocate to urban populations as another attempt to erase and assimilate us. Having this story banned in schools "terminates" our right to exist once more. If it's banned in one school, make sure it's put into hundreds of others to make up for that censorship!

Awards for "Indian No More":
• American Indian Youth Literature Middle Grade Book Award, 2020
• Editors' Choices for Books for Youth, Booklist
• Best of the Best Books of 2019, Chicago Public Library
• Starred review, School Library Journal
• Starred review, Booklist
