More on lesser-known female artists

Suzanne Valadon – 1867-1938
Little known French female artist born in 1867 from an unmarried laundress. She went to school until age 14 and then did many jobs most interestingly joining the circus and learning the trapeze.

She started drawing at a young age and found the performers of the circus great models. She fell from the trapeze and hurt her back and was forced to find another occupation. She became an artist’s model for Toulouse-Lautrec and Renoir. She is the woman in City Dance by Renoir.

She continued to practice art and learn from the artists she worked with as a model. She became friends with Degas, who took an interest in her art and even taught her printmaking techniques.

She is known for her outrageous female and male n**e paintings. N**e males were not painted as females were at the time. She used flat, rich colors, strong contours, and colorful ornamental backgrounds.

Her painting “The Blue Room” depicts her mature style portraying a woman with a carefree attitude with a cigarette in her mouth and wearing striped trousers, which was not the norm for women of the early 20th century. Her work was very different from other female contemporary artists of her time like Mary Cassatt and Berthe Morisot. Perhaps coming from a lower class level allowed her to be more creative with her subject matter.

She was married, divorced, and had 1 illegitimate son, Maurice Utrillo. She lived and made art on her own terms living extremely independently. Yet, she was included in the art world as a woman from a lower class. She was accepted into many art shows and became a successful full-time artist.

A little Art History About Vivian Maier- An American Photographer
Vivian Maier - 1926-2009
Vivian was born in New York city and spent 5 decades taking pictures in New York and Chicago leaving 100K of undeveloped negatives.

She was a remarkable street photographer who wasn’t discovered until she died.

She started her career with a Kodak Brownie camera. I am pretty sure I had one of those. There was no shutter speed, numerous lenses, or all the bells and whistles in those days. You see, you don’t need all the fancy equipment to create beautiful pictures or any other kind of art, for that matter.

What you need is a spark, so to speak, of looking at the world around you differently.

She took pictures daily that told a story of that moment in time, which we can enjoy forever. They were pictures of regular people, sitting, eating, walking, talking, laughing, and simply living.

She played with reflections, shadows, and light and showed us the details of the grit of life in one blissful second.

Between the Cracks

The space
where they leave us
sweet freshly cut grass
breakfast bacon
warm cookies
morning coffee
rain in the pines
balmy sunsets
our heart knows
and remembers

Thoughts weigh
Heavy,
Trying to lead,
They should follow.

Shouting,
Repetition,
Not a soft caress.

No respect for
Silence,
The purity of quiet,
Perfection.

Fog rolling in,
Gray, blue mist,
Edging,
Within my spirit.

Soon it will lift,
Release,
Celebrate,
create anew.
