🐝 NATIVE BEE SPOTLIGHT: SWEAT BEES

📛 NAME
Small sweat bees (Lasioglossum). Their name comes from the attraction some have to the salts in human perspiration.

📏 SIZE
About ⅛ to ⅜ inch long, depending on the species. A worker honey bee is about ½ to ⅝ inch long.

Our pictured comparison: a 0.20-inch sweat bee beside a 0.60-inch honey bee. One-third as long!

📍 REGION
Native species occur across the United States. Which ones you’ll see depends on your region and local habitat. Look for these tiny bees visiting garden flowers.

💛 SWEAT OR SWEET?
Sometimes called “sweet bees,” their commonly recognized name is sweat bees. Either way, these tiny pollinators deserve a closer look!

🌼 HOW TO HELP
Plant flowers native to your area and leave a small patch of undisturbed, bare soil. Many sweat bees nest underground.

We are so proud of the schools, teachers, and organizations that are passionate about teaching our kids and creating much-needed habitat for pollinators.

🌼 Introducing the $100 Pollinator Garden Grant! 🐝

Save The Bees USA has proudly supported pollinator gardens, and now we want to help create even more of them across the country.

Our new $100 Pollinator Garden Grant is available to schools and environmentally focused organizations that want to create or expand pollinator habitat in their communities.

The grant can help purchase pollinator-friendly plants, seeds, soil, mulch, garden supplies, educational signs, and plant labels.

We are proud to support the UNCG Plant & Pollinator Center at UNC Greensboro as they expand their native pollinator garden this fall.

Protecting pollinators requires more than helping honey bees alone. Native bees, butterflies, and countless other pollinating insects depend on healthy habitat and diverse native plants for food, nesting areas, and survival.

By supporting organizations doing meaningful research, education, and conservation work in their communities, we can help turn individual projects into a much larger nationwide effort.

Thank you, Texas Bee Haus, for everything you are doing for your community!

We have beekeepers across the country who are teaching kids, mentoring new beekeepers, and helping their communities better understand the importance of bees and other pollinators. At Save The Bees USA, we want to support those beekeepers however we can and give them the tools and resources they need to keep that education going.

Texas Bee Haus is a great example of exactly what we want to support. We’re excited to have provided them with a new Apimaye hive and even more excited to see how they use it to educate and engage their community.
