I’m grateful for every version of myself that got me here.

But I’m not trying to find my way back to an earlier version of myself. I’m choosing what I want to carry forward.

There’s a lot I still want to do, experience, and create. And I’m excited about what’s ahead.

Here’s to 48.

And thank you for all the birthday wishes!

We have a strange habit in health of responding to a struggling body by asking even more from it.

Eat less.
Train harder.
Be more disciplined.
Manage your stress.
Fix your sleep.
Add another supplement.

But what if you’re already doing a lot of the “right” things?

And still…

Your energy isn’t what it used to be.
You’re not recovering as well.
Your focus is off.
Your digestion has changed.
Your body composition is changing.
Things that used to work just…don’t anymore.

Especially in midlife, I’m not immediately thinking you need to try harder.

I want to know what your body has been trying to keep up with.

Are you adequately nourished?
How are you sleeping and recovering?
What does your stress load actually look like?
How well are you regulating blood sugar?
What patterns are showing up in your minerals and labs?

Because there’s a difference between asking your body to perform and actually giving it the capacity to do so.

Sometimes the answer isn’t more discipline.

It’s figuring out what’s quietly draining your capacity, then rebuilding from there.

I’m Shawna. And if you’re new here, hi!

I’m a functional medicine consultant, but my interest in health started long before it became my work.

Almost three decades ago, my own health challenges led me down a path of researching, questioning and trying to understand how the body actually works. That curiosity eventually became formal education in functional medicine, health coaching and mineral analysis.

Today, I help people better understand what may be driving the symptoms and patterns they’re experiencing, and what we can actually do about them.

A lot of my work comes back to the things that affect how we feel and function every day: energy, metabolism, stress, digestion, hormones, nutrient status, sleep and resilience. Rather than looking at those things in isolation, I’m interested in understanding how they connect and what may be happening underneath them.

And I want the people I work with to understand their own bodies and feel equipped to make thoughtful, informed decisions about their health long after our work together.

There’s another big part of my life you’ll see here too: animals.

My interest in animal health started with my own pets and grew through more than a decade of working in animal rescue. That eventually led me to pursue additional education in integrative veterinary care, and somewhere along the way, those two worlds started coming together. Today, my work includes both human and animal health.

So around here, you’ll find functional medicine, metabolic health, minerals, lifestyle, stress, animals, some questioning of what we’ve accepted as “normal” in healthcare, and probably pieces of my own life along the way.

If you’ve been here for a while, thanks for sticking around while I got a little quiet.

And if you’re new, I’m glad you’re here.

There’s a lot I’m ready to talk about.

One of the biggest perspective shifts I want to bring to this page is the difference between managing something and understanding why it’s happening.

While there are times when medication or symptom management is absolutely necessary, I don’t think the conversation should end there.

If your blood pressure is high, I want to know why.

If you’re exhausted despite “normal” labs, I want to know why.

If you need something every day to manage reflux, constipation, headaches, sleep, blood sugar, or another persistent symptom, I want to know what’s happening underneath it.

Symptoms are information.

And sometimes we spend so much time trying to quiet them that we never stop to ask why they’re happening in the first place.

That’s the question I keep coming back to:

What is driving this?

Foundations first. Always.

I used to genuinely think I would never be able to have a blood draw again.

I had a few many, many years ago that didn’t go well, and after that I basically just refused to do them. It honestly seemed crazy to me because I’m not fearful of much. But for whatever reason, my response to this was so intense.

Then I started having some of my own health challenges and realized that avoiding bloodwork for the rest of my life probably isn’t going to work.

So I had to figure out what did work for me.

And now I have a handful of things I do every single time that have completely changed the experience. Are they a little quirky? Probably.

I just tell whoever is drawing my blood, “I have a hard time with this, so I need to do a few things first and then I’ll be good to go.”

I go into the room, do my thing, and within a minute or so I’m ready. No one has ever cared or given me a hard time about it.

And then it’s done.

It might seem like such a small thing, but every time I walk out after a successful blood draw I am legitimately excited. And I will happily keep doing my few quirky little things every single time because they work for me.

Yesterday I took a break from work, met up with my family for lunch, and spent the afternoon at the skate park.

The to-do list will always be there, but opportunities to make memories won’t.

It was a good reminder that sometimes the best part of the day isn’t the thing you crossed off your list.

If you’re waiting for January to change your life, you’re already giving your power away.

I’m not someone who treats the New Year like a switch you flip and suddenly become a new person. I don’t do resolutions. I don’t wait for dates on a calendar to give me permission to change.

I like fresh beginnings. A Monday, a new month, a blank page…but they don’t define my direction. My work, my growth, my intentions happen in real time, all year long. Reflection isn’t an annual event for me. It’s a practice.

The people who follow through are rarely the ones who wait for January. They’re the ones who decide in the middle of an ordinary day, “This matters,” and take the next honest step. No drama. No performance. Just alignment and action.

You don’t need a New Year to do that. You need willingness, self-awareness, and a strategy that actually fits your life.

This past year stretched me, shaped me, and opened doors I’m grateful for, and I’m excited for what’s ahead. If you’re walking your own path of intentional growth, I’m glad we’re here together.

This isn’t about dismissing resolutions. It’s about telling the truth because I want to see people actually win. Real change doesn’t come from hype or wishful thinking. It comes from honesty, self-awareness, and the courage to take aligned action.

I’m rooting for you✨

There’s a moment when the way you’ve been feeling stops being normal, and you can’t pretend it’s fine anymore.

And the reality is, most people don’t realize how much their body has been adapting until something forces them to stop and pay attention.

If you’ve been pushing through low energy, mood swings, poor sleep, irritability, or that “off” feeling you can’t explain…your body’s been carrying more than it should.

Patterns don’t lie. And the longer you ignore them, the louder they have to get.

This is exactly why I created The Mineral Map — to give you a clear, data-backed way to understand what your body has been trying to tell you for months (or years).

Minerals shape your stress response, energy, hormones, recovery, and resilience.

If your body feels unpredictable…there’s a reason.
And there’s a pattern.
You just need the right lens to see it.

Enrollment for The Mineral Map closes tonight at 9 p.m.
I have 4 early access rate spots left for this first round.

If this has been tugging at you, even subtly, consider that your signal.
Your body’s ready for clarity.

A lot of women feel wired, tired, anxious, foggy, or “not themselves”… and still get told their labs look “fine.”

My own HTMA revealed something that bloodwork couldn’t: bio-unavailable copper — excess copper stored in tissues that the body can’t use properly.

This pattern quietly affects energy, mood, hormones, sleep, and stress tolerance.

It explained so many patterns I’ve seen in myself and in clients: the crashes, the wired-but-tired feeling, the irritability, the emotional ups and downs, the “I don’t feel like myself” days, the hormone unpredictability.

Seeing this validated what my body had been quietly signaling for a long time.

If you see yourself in any of this — the wired-but-tired loop, the mood shifts, the “off” feeling you can’t explain, this is exactly why I created The Mineral Map.

It helps you understand what your body has been holding, what it needs, and where to go from here.
