Every guitar has stories. Twenty years ago, my friend John was stationed in Korea. He met a man who ran a guitar factory. John gave the man two bottles of Jameson whiskey to build me this guitar. John asked the man to make something hollow that looks like something T Bone Walker would play.

Most of our schooling is focused on the acquisition and temporary retention of information—but actual learning is about much more than this. One on one instruction lets us discover how the individual learns. Patience, process, practice, and persistence are crucial habits, but these must be learned.
When we first get started on guitar, we get our fingers moving and we get used to the stings, but I let the students teach me quite a bit about themselves. Together we learn how to learn, and the instrument becomes a great vehicle for personal discovery and development. Everyone’s path is at least a little bit different.

"Is there a more mysterious idea than to imagine how nature is reflected in the eyes of animals?" —Franz Marc
Happy ! 🌍 Among the German Expressionists, artists who used strong color and exaggerated form to express emotional content, Franz Marc was a leader in his empathic interest in the life of animals. Beginning in 1905, he devoted himself to representing the world with a fresh and purifying vision.
This work’s title—"The Bewitched Mill" (1913)—refers to the "magical" harmony Marc sensed between human life, represented by the houses and mill on the left, and nature, embodied by the lyrical region of trees and animals on the right.
See this painting by Franz Marc on view in Gallery 392.

How to Understand Modern Art Like an Art Historian | Art & Object "The period that scholars define as “modern” is inarguably complicated—but this makes it a rich and rewarding area to study. It is difficult to overstate how many important social and political changes occurred in this period, all of which had tangible effects on the art world in Western Europ...

"Cupid Chastised" (1613) depicts a moment of high drama: Mars, the god of war, beats Cupid for having caused his affair with Venus, the goddess of love, which exposed him to the derision and outrage of the other gods. Venus implores him in vain to desist.
Surrounded by darkness, the three figures are boldly illuminated from the left, intensifying the dynamism and impact of the composition. The sheer physicality of the figures conveys the violent discord of the scene. On one level a tale of domestic disturbance, the story also symbolizes the eternal conflict between love and war.
Following the example of the revolutionary early 17th-century artist Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, Bartolomeo Manfredi chose to depict ordinary individuals in his scenes from the Bible and Greek and Roman mythology. Employing dramatic lighting and locating the action directly before the viewer, these artists were able to endow their narratives with great immediacy and power.
See Bartolomeo Manfredi's "Cupid Chastised" among other early 17th-century "Caravaggesque" paintings now on view in Gallery 211.

I believe that every person is unique, and that each of us is gifted with talents and tools that we are meant to discover, and use in the world. In other words, everyone has intrinsic value, and everyone has the need to create, to live as a creative human. I use the word “discover” above, because it’s a matter of exploration, of learning about oneself. Our purpose and our talents are not always readily apparent, and often, we are not given the opportunity to discover them, let alone the support we need in putting them to use.
We don’t simply learn things. For example, we don’t simply learn guitar. We learn to practice something, to create and implement good habits, and we learn how to learn—each person does these in a unique way too.
So reach out, schedule here. If you have any questions, contact me via the Free Spirits’ Workshop’s page.
