WHAT DOES “SOFT HANDS” ACTUALLY MEAN?
“Soft hands” doesn’t mean having loose reins and barely touching your horse’s mouth.
It means being able to communicate through the reins without constantly pulling, hanging on, or creating unnecessary pressure.
A rider with soft hands:
✨ Uses the reins as a communication tool—not something to balance on
✨ Maintains a consistent, following contact
✨ Gives/releases when the horse responds correctly
✨ Uses the smallest amount of pressure necessary
✨ Allows their hands to follow the horse’s movement
✨ Combines their hands with their seat, legs, and body
✨ Doesn’t constantly pull back when the horse makes a mistake
One of the biggest things I tell riders is:
Soft hands aren’t about having no contact. They’re about knowing when to create pressure AND, more importantly, when to release it.
If we constantly pull, our horses can become dull to the pressure. If we never release, they don’t learn what the correct answer was.
Think ask → response → release
The goal isn’t to have a horse that simply gives to the reins.
The goal is to have a horse that listens to your entire body and responds to a light cue.
