Lowndes Middle School

This past week, I had the privilege of attending Dr. Carol Krueger’s Music Literacy Workshop in Jacksonville, Florida, hosted by the Jacksonville Children’s Chorus.

Last summer, attending this workshop completely transformed the way I think about music education. It challenged me to move beyond simply teaching students to decode music and instead focus on developing truly musically literate singers who can read, understand, and think independently as musicians.

Returning for a second year allowed me to deepen my understanding, refine my teaching practices, and learn even more strategies that I am excited to bring back to the LMS Chorus classroom this fall.

As educators, we are lifelong learners, and I am grateful for opportunities like this to continue growing so that I can provide the best possible musical experiences for our students. I can’t wait to see how these ideas help our singers grow during the upcoming school year!

Let’s Welcome Courtney Devereaux, School Counselor to Lowndes Middle.

Courtney Devereaux will be joining Lowndes Middle as one of the school counselors. She brings 10 years of experience in school counseling, including 8 years in Tift County Schools and 2 years in Brooks County Schools. She is passionate about supporting students’ academic, social, and emotional growth.

Courtney is married to Justin and is the proud mother of two daughters, Micole and Paisley. Micole recently graduated from Valdosta State University, and Paisley attends Hahira Elementary School.

Courtney is excited to join the Viking family and looks forward to serving and supporting students, staff, and families in her new role.

Lowndes Middle School is proud to welcome Josh Barfield as their new Assistant Principal!

Josh Barfield is an experienced educational leader with more than 20 years of service in public education. He most recently served as Assistant Principal at Northside Elementary School, where he oversaw Pre-K programs, served as Testing Coordinator, MTSS Coordinator, EIP Coordinator, and managed student discipline for grades Pre-K through 5.

Prior to entering administration, Josh built a distinguished career as a mathematics educator. From 2015 to 2023, he taught 8th Grade Mathematics and Accelerated Algebra I at Hahira Middle School, serving as both Team Leader and Math Content Lead. His commitment to student achievement and instructional excellence earned him the Hahira Middle School Teacher of the Year award for the 2022–2023 school year.

Josh’s teaching experience spans middle and high school mathematics across multiple districts. He taught at Pine Grove Middle School, Lowndes High School, Hahira Middle School, and Fayette County High School, instructing courses including Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, and Math Money Management. Throughout his career, he has held numerous leadership roles, including department chair, team leader, coach, and club sponsor.

His passion for education, curriculum development, and student success continues to guide his work as an instructional leader dedicated to creating positive learning environments and supporting academic growth for all students.
