My first day back in 5th Grade was awesome! Not only are the kids in my class full of great energy, I received a surprise from from an 8th grader, whom I had in class the last two years.

This 8th Grader created a book of concept art for a story she was working on at home this summer.

The purpose? To give my new 5th grade students inspiration for their stories this year!

This particular 8th grader is an amazing artist and did a wonderful job of capturing her characters and backstory through hand drawn images and intricate details.

Safe to say I will miss having her, as well as the other junior high kids in my class, but relationships and inspiration are created and maintained to outlast the time students are in the physical classroom.

I am so proud of her and cannot wait to see how her work inspires my 5th Graders!

Today was a great day!

Throwing it back to the Fall of 2023 and the event that led to the birth of Creativity Ink.

For a little context, our district has been and continues to face issues with space for students and teachers.

Why?

It turns out that amazing schools are a magnet for families.

I am extremely blessed to work alongside such wonderful students, staff, administrators, and families that have made Waltham the best school around.

Simply put, we give a “private school feel in a public school setting.” It’s truly a privilege to be a small part of our culture.

But I digress, in the Spring of 2023, with our building at capacity, I was approached to teach 6th-8th Grade Writing in one our common spaces, typically reserved for anything but an actual classroom.

What followed was a transformation of not only my own approach to teaching, but finding and sharing way to approach embracing challenges in general.

As things typically do when I’m feeling engaged; the ideas came fast and furious. Soon, with the cooperation of our administration and input from others, that common space became UNcommon.

It was a space designed to mimic a coffee shop, with high top tables, booths, stools, plants, and, of course, coffee decor.

It wasn’t long until one thing led to another and the kids began to quickly embrace the changes. They immediately loved the setup and embraced doing things in an uncommon way.

It was October of that year that the kids decided, as we were “publishing” our fictional stories, that weI created a brand to represent the uncommon direction we were taking each day.

Shortly after, Creativity Ink, a student nominated brand name, was born.

We continued pushing the boundaries of what that brand meant in regard to creating and maintaining uncommon and meaningful ways to engage with others using reading and writing.

The following school year, we decide to hold holding ELA night monthly events, outside of school,, for our 6th-8th graders to enjoy fellowship and fun with one another and those surrounding our community. We built on that momentum last year as well, and hope to achieve more uncommon and powerful activities for students and families alike in the future.

That was a little bit of history for you about our origin, born this day in 2023.

Here’s to an amazing new chapter with my 5th Grade class in 2026-2027 and beyond!

Coming soon! The Ink Tank is slated to be our brand new cross curricular time, allowing 5th graders to collaborate, create, and let student choice guide their learning across math, STEAM, Social Studies, and the Arts.

Using a flexible approach of short-term , long-term group projects, hands-on creation, multimedia projects, and reflective writing, students will dive deeper into topics that spark their curiosity and then work together to bring big ideas to life!

Is it possible to miss something you haven’t experienced yet? Because that’s the way I’m feeling right now. 🥹

On a personal note I’m currently home recovering from a minor surgery earlier this week. While I am steadily recovering, this has forced me to slow down, and in the process miss the first day of school in my new adventure in 5th grade.

I’d like to thank the entire Waltham family for all your support, today and everyday!

I hope to be back ASAP, but this picture from my sub gave me a great big smile!

To all the kids, teachers, administrators, support staff, and families out there, have the best school year ever!

After weeks of planning and days of ex*****on and a ton of support from friends and family, my 5th Grade Reading, Writing, and Social Studies classroom has now been remixed.

This year our latest coffee shop theme will hold a soft opening next Wednesday evening. I am looking forward to meeting all my new families at that time.

Here’s to an amazing school year for all! Thank you for following along on our journey..

The next chapter is about to be written…
