We do more than research. Last Sunday, some of us participated in the SWE X BMES Best Buds 5k. This is Thea, Kaitlyn, and Dr. Reck, along with other current UI Department of Bioengineering students, after the race.

This week Dr. Reck is attending the Accessibility in STEM 2026 Conference at NC State. We are excited to share how we have applied engineering design in our research to improve accessibility in lab courses.

We have been collaborating with The Grainger College of Engineering Lab and Design Community of Practice to identify barriers for students with disabilities in lab and design courses. We will share our initial findings at this afternoon. We appreciate the support from the IDEA Institute for this project.

At FIE2024 we shared an assignment modification to the temperature sensor lab in BIOE415. The goal was for students to be able to critically think about the difference between doing analysis by hand, with purpose built and validated software, & with a tool based on a large language model. This video shows some of the slides from our presentation today.

Thank you to everyone who attended our lunch and learn workshop today. We had great conversations about applying engineering design to lab course development. I enjoyed sharing our work over the past year to make BIOE415 more inclusive and valuable for the students. Thank you to the Kern Family Foundation and AE3 for supporting this event!
