Wyandot County EI is excited to welcome Krystina Carlisle to our team! Krystina is a registered dietician and may be a familiar face in the community, as she is the director of Wyandot County's WIC program. We are so happy that Krystina is also joining the EI Team to provide nutrition services and consult with families and service providers.
All Early Intervention families benefit from our entire team of professionals, including physical, occupational, and speech therapists, as well as a developmental specialist, hearing, vision and mental health specialists and now nutrition support! ✨

It's a big weekend coming up and we want to share some tips to make celebrations fun for all. Fireworks can be stressful and overwhelming for adults and children with sensory sensitivities due to loud, unpredictable booms, bright flashes, crowds, and vibrations.
Keys for successful celebrations:
1. Prepare Before the Event
o Talk about what’s coming: Explain the event, timing, and what to expect. Visit beforehand if possible.
o Practice calming techniques: Use deep breathing, counting, stress balls, or weighted lap pads before fireworks start and as needed throughout.
o Use social stories or videos: Show pictures or videos of fireworks at a controlled volume to build familiarity.
o Create a visual schedule: Show when you’ll leave, where you’ll be, and when fireworks start.
2. Sensory Supports to Bring
o Noise-canceling headphones or earbuds
o Sunglasses or visor to reduce bright lights
o Fidgets or comfort items (toys, blankets)
o Weighted lap pad or blanket for deep pressure input
3. Viewing Location Strategies
o Distance - Sit farther away or watch from a car.
o Intentional Exit - Choose a spot with a quick and clear exit route.
4. During the Event
o Take breaks: Schedule quiet time in a private quiet zone (inside a car or house).
o Early exit: Give permission to exit before the end of the event if overwhelmed.
o Use streaming or live video: Watch from home or on a device.
o Stay hydrated and nourished: Bring water and favorite snacks.
5. After the Event
o Rest and self-regulate: Use calming tools and quiet time to recover.
o Reflect on what worked: Adjust strategies for next year.
Tip: If fireworks are not manageable, that’s okay—there are many other ways to celebrate the season.

Infants need at least 30 minutes of tummy time each day? Tummy time helps build a child’s head, neck, and upper body muscles, which will be needed to develop skills later on.

Encourage your toddlers to do physical activity by keeping it fun! Here are some ideas:
1. Use balls with different textures to practice catching and bouncing.
2. Make up games to incorporate different types of movement, like jumping over puddles or cracks, or chasing bubbles.
3. Invent silly walks or runs, like running like a monkey or jumping like a bunny.

Your child learns the most about healthy and active living from you, so include your whole family in regular physical activity and healthy eating. Here are some tips:
— Keep activities fun!
— Pick appropriate activities for your child’s age and development.
— Enroll your kids in sports and take them to the park to play.

Kids need 60+ minutes of activity every day, but it doesn’t have to happen all at once! Think about ways you can squeeze quick activity sessions into different parts of your child’s day.

Everyone benefits from regular exercise. Here are some ways your child can benefit:
— Stronger muscles and bones.
— Lower chance of type two diabetes.
— Lower blood pressure and blood cholesterol levels.
— Better outlook on life.

Different ages require different amounts and types of physical activity! Check out what type of physical activity your child needs 👉https://caringforkids.cps.ca/handouts/healthy-living/physical_activity.

How can families support healthy active living for their children?
— Set screen time limits.
— Play organized sports.
— If possible, consider walking them to school instead of driving.
— Encourage protective equipment use.
— Be a good role model.
