I have so many emotions today as Upper Darby will graduate 1000 amazing students and I will not be a sitting School Board Director or speaking at the graduation as Board President singing their praises. Nevertheless, I am still just as proud and impressed by their perseverance, intelligence, inquisitiveness, accomplishments and overall zest for life. I know with certainty that the future is bright because of this group and many leaders will emerge that will make meaningful and impactful impressions on many lives. The Upper Darby School District produces incredible students and this year is no exception.

The Upper Darby Graduation is steeped in tradition and it was always an honor to put on a cap and gown and be an active participant in such a joyous ceremony. As Mayor and certainly as a former School Board Director and President, I will always recollect fondly and support this amazing event. I look forward to attending this event for many years to come. Congratulations Dr. McGarry and your team on another amazing year.

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL OF THE UPPER DARBY HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES AND THEIR FAMILIES!!!

It was an emotional and thoroughly enjoyable next-to-last School Board meeting on Tuesday. It was my last meeting serving as Board President as I turned over the reins to my friend and colleague, Don Fields. One of my last acts as President was to swear in my re-elected colleagues, Damien Warsavage, Desiree LaMarr Morrisey, and Don Fields. I was also able to swear in my new colleagues, Kimberly Glenn and Brittney Williams.

Next, I was recognized my Board colleagues for my service and was given gag gifts (Eagles stuff), and beautiful gifts, a Cowboys blanket and tumbler, a bottle of sangria, a coffee mug with the word “patience” engraved on it, and a replica of Thor’s hammer. I truly appreciated the warm sentiments and the nice gestures from everyone led by Don.

To top off a wonderful meeting, I was thrilled to see my friend, Dena Koser-Hanna, an amazing counselor at Highland Park Elementary School and a 25-year member of the School District, receive the District’s prestigious UnSung Hero Award. She has done wonderful work with children including mine for a long period of time and we are lucky to have her in our community.

It was a night to remember. My closing remarks as President start at 8:47.

Before I am sworn in as the Mayor of Upper Darby Township, I have to relinquish several roles that I am proud to hold. One is the Eastern Zone Representative and a member of the Governing Board for the PA School Boards Association. I attended my last meeting this weekend and it was bittersweet.

This amazing organization provides top-notch services, training and support to the 500 school districts in PA. I am thankful to have worked with CEO, Nathan Mains, President, David Schaap, President-Elect, Mike Gossert, Immediate Past-President, David Hein, and Western Zone Representative, Marsha Pleta.

It was a pleasure attending the Appreciation Dinner at Delaware County Community College this evening with my fellow directors, Rachel Mitchell, Don Fields, Desiree Murphy Morrissey, and Debra Williams. As a sponsoring school district, we are proud that so many of our students take advantage of the excellent programs the college offers at a discounted cost. President Cronin's vision for DCCC is inspiring. The future is bright for all involved.

Please see our investment in the Upper Darby School District.

The highlight of my day so far was participating in the fun and festivities of Student of the Month at Bywood Elementary. Somehow, they convinced me to be a part of the cheeseballs and shaving cream contest where the students throw cheeseballs at our heads. Whoever gets the most wins. It was a lot of fun!!

What an amazing day! I was honored as School Board President to give an inspirational speech this morning to start of the 2023-2024 School Year where we welcomed all Teachers, Administrators and Staff. The enthusiasm was infectious.

This evening, we also had a ribbon cutting ceremony and held our first School Board Meeting in our brand new Administrative Building and Board Room.

This community continues to invest in our children to ensure they have the best that we can offer.
